Letter to the Editor Fulton Chain: We need to work for change

Dear Jay,

Thank you for your continued coverage of the boating safety issue. Many many people are talking openly about it in town.

We seem to have become a dumping ground for the big boat owners whose egos are bigger than their brains. Travel to Big Moose Lake, Twitchell, Blue Mountain or Lake Placid. Check how many outsized and overly loud boats you encounter. Why our chain of lakes??

Now is the time to write letters to the governing bodies of our waters. Sign petitions on control of boat size, noise level, speed and hours of operation…

After 10 p.m. recently, one of these loud boats was traveling at a very high rate of speed on the lakes in pitch dark! Can that error in judgement lead to anything positive? Perhaps you were the fisherman out hoping for a peaceful evening of good fishing. How did you react to that boat?

Think about the many times the State Police run random DWI checks on our roads. Why not do the same on our waters? Wouldn’t that be an eye opener? I guess it depends upon which door you exit at the local bar…THE Road side or the water side. Interesting concept.

Thank you to the others who have spoken up in support. We need to work for change on the waters we love. Do your part if you support these ideas.

Patrolling of the Fulton Chain of Lakes is under the jurisdiction of the Herkimer County Sheriff’s Department. Send your letters of concern to: Herkimer County Sheriff Christopher P. Farber, 320 North Main St. #2900, Herkimer, NY 13350.
