Funeral services set in Sauquoit for Alice G. Pylman Cole, 95

Alice G. Pylman Cole, 95, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon on August 19, 2013 at the Presbyterian Home. She was born on March 13, 1918 in Whitesboro, NY to the late Albert and Anna Tjallama Pylman. In 1923, Alice’s family moved to Chadwicks and it was then that they started Pylman’s Home Bakery.

After graduating from Chadwicks School, Alice attended Cortland College majoring in Education. She was an elementary teacher for thirty four years, having taught fourth grade at the Chadwicks Union Free School and later as a second grade teacher at New Hartford Central School until her retirement. 

She was also a Girl Scout leader and through the years had a tremendous impact on many children’s lives.

On Thanksgiving Eve in 1949, she married Harold Cole of Sauquoit in the Methodist Parsonage in Sauquoit, a union filled with love and devotion until his death on June 25, 2004.

Her memberships included Valley Stars 217, formerly Maple Valley Eastern Star and was a Life Member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association. She was also a lifelong member of the Willowvale and later Sauquoit United Methodist Church and shared her time and talents serving in the U.M.W.

Alice also volunteered her time at the Old Forge Arts Center as well as at the Presbyterian Home for many years where she brought companionship and kind words to all.

In 1982 Alice and Harold moved from Sauquoit to Old Forge and for many years also enjoyed winters in Braden Castle in Bradenton, FL.

Alice loved her time spent at her summer home in Old Forge where she especially enjoyed watching Liam, Connor, James, Sara, Hanna, Emma, Tommy, Samantha, William and Nathan grow and change throughout the years.

She loved her family and cherished her time with them. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Pylman Hinman and her sister-in-law, Charlotte Pylman; her nephews, Bill Hinman and Wanda, James Hinman and Barbara, Ron Pylman, Al Pylman and Patricia, Tim Pylman and Cindy, Rob Pylman and Janet, David Pylman, Jim Pylman and Mickie, her nieces, Deb Barry and John and Donna Pylman, 15 great nieces and nephews; Jill, James, William, Raymond, Trista, Laura, Christopher, Jacob, John, Timothy, Erica, Alicia, Jay, Amy and Lorrie. She also leaves many great great nephews and nieces and members of the Cole family.

Alice will also be missed by her loyal and loving friend, Ruth Lewis.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Hank Pylman and Dutch Pylman, her brother-in-law, Bill Hinman, her sister-in-law, Elsie Pylman as well as her niece Cathy, her nephew Paul and her two great nephews Joe and John.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Sauquoit United Methodist Church.

Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, 3022 Oneida St., Sauquoit.

Valley Stars 217 will conduct ritualistic services on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
