Three Ad’k-themed book signings scheduled at Adirondack Reader

Pieter Gaskin will sign copies of his new book, Adirondack Luau, at the Adirondack Reader in Inlet on Saturday, August 10 from noon to 2 p.m.

Adirondack Luau tells the tale of Peleki, an eight year old boy from Oahu, Hawaii who has just finished his school year. He can’t wait to spend his summer at the beach playing his ukulele in his family’s band, but he is surprised to learn he will be spending two weeks with his grandparents in the Adirondack Mountains instead.

Gaskin was born in Watertown, but it wasn’t long before he had his first visit to the Adirondacks. Five days after his birth, he was brought to a cottage on Cranberry Lake. There he would spend his summers with his parents and grandparents, fishing and hiking trails to explore fire towers.

Today he still enjoys visiting the Adirondacks as often as he can.

Gaskin will join Gary and Justin VanRiper, authors of The Black Fly Bad Guy, the latest book in the Adirondack Kids series. The VanRipers will be available to sign books from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, August 14, Walt McLaughlin will be signing copies of his latest book “Deep Allure of the Woods: Backpacking the Northville-Placid Trail,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The book offers a detailed account of McLaughlin’s solitary trek through some of the wildest, most remote parts of the Adirondacks.

McLaughlin, who has eight books currently in print, has hiked throughout the Northeast and has written extensively about his backcountry experiences. His work has appeared in Adirondac, Vermont Life, Writing Nature and many other periodicals.
