Webb School Senior Spotlight- Michael Salsbury

Michael Salsbury enjoys outdoors, ready for graduation, college

High school senior, Michael Salsbury, 17, has attended Town of Webb School since 9th grade after moving to Old Forge with his family from Keene, New Hampshire.

Born in Virginia, he has also lived in Singapore and Paris, due to his father’s job in Human Resources.

Living in other countries has been beneficial, he said, because he has been able to learn a lot about the world.

He likes living in Old Forge, he said. “It has its advantages because it’s a small town.”

At the time of this interview he was undecided about the major he will pursue, but a college he was considering was Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, because it’s a small school.

“It would be easier to talk to the professors,” he said, adding that the mild weather is also a big factor because he prefers a warmer climate.

Although he is not a fan of winter, he takes advantage of the winter opportunities in Old Forge.

“I go skiing at McCauley constantly for my own recreation, but I’m not on the ski team,” he said. His school sports include baseball and soccer and he is a member of the Varsity Club.

His favorite subject at school is sociology and his favorite teacher is social studies teacher, Jed Kinney.

He plays guitar in the Stage Band and enjoys listening to music, as well as making music, he said.

He also enjoys playing soccer, “and going surfing every chance I get when I’m down on the coast.”

Another interest is writing novels. “I have a few I’m working on right now—just regular fiction,” he said.

His interest in reading no doubt inspired him to write novels, he said.

During the summer he works at Mountainman Outdoor Sports.

He said he is getting excited about his approaching high school graduation.

“Right now I’m just trying to get through the year and then it’s off to college,” he said.

Michael is the son of Mark and Patty Salsbury, and he has one sister, Samantha, who is 23.
