Webb School Senior Spotlight- Terren Waranis

Terren Waranis enjoys studying electronics, especially audio

High School Senior Terren Waranis has attended the Town of Webb School since kindergarten.

“It’s been pretty good. I like the small town setting and being able to know everybody. Being in a big school would be pretty chaotic compared to here,” he said.

Terren is looking forward to college and at the time of this interview had applied to MVCC and SUNYIT to major in electrical engineering.

He had also been considering Finger Lakes Community College where he could study studio recording mechanics.

“I like music and I’ve always messed around with the drums and piano,” he said, adding that he plays the Saxophone in Stage Band and the Pit Band at school, and he also plays guitar.

At one time Terren was a member of the school’s track team and alpine ski team, but now he skis for his own recreation.

“I like winter because I love to ski and I go skiing as much as I can, but I really enjoy the summers more,” he said.

During the summer he enjoys biking, kayaking and canoeing. He also works at the Mountain-man Outdoor Center, where they sell and rent canoes and kayaks.

“It’s nice to get out on the river,” he said.

He doesn’t have a favorite subject at school, but he enjoys doing research on electronics when he’s at home.

“I’ve always liked to tinker around with stuff and I’m sure if I go into electrical engineering, the College Calculus I’m taking now will help me. It’s pretty difficult but once you get the hang of it, it’s okay.”

Terren did the lighting for the Nutcracker production at the Strand Theatre in December, he said. “And I’ve also run the light board at the old Arts Center.”

It’s been a good experience living in the Old Forge area all his life, he said.

“I like living in the middle of the woods compared to a city, because it opens up a lot of things you can do, like hiking, and it’s such a beautiful area. Some kids don’t like it because we don’t have McDonald’s or a Walmart, but we don’t have to deal with the city craziness,” he said.

Terren said he is looking forward to graduation.

“It’s going to be good. I’m going to feel that I’m moving on to a new section of my life. I’ll be done with this long experience here and moving on to a new era.”

Terren is the son of Mark and Laurie Waranis of Old Forge and he has an older sister, Kiera.
