Otter Lake Church celebrates 90th season on Sunday, Aug. 28

The Otter Lake Community Church is celebrating its 90th season of ministry on Sunday, August 28, the anniversary of its first service.

The historic Adirondack Carpenter-Gothic style church, was originally built in Hawkinsville in 1859 by German Lutherans and dedicated in 1861 as St. Trinitus Church.

Thirty years later in 1891, the building was abandoned and stood vacant until the spring of 1921 when Roscoe G. Norton, B. A. Capron and W.C. Schaufler secured the vacant building, then had it disassembled, board by board.

All of the boards were numbered before transporting them to the current site in 1921, where the church was rebuilt, said Carole Gehrig, Trustee and Committee Chair, who is the great granddaughter of W. C. Schaufler.

St. Mary of the Snows in Otter Lake will celebrate its 90th Anniversary during the 11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 14.

According to the Catholic Sun church bulletin, dated July 7, 1921, St. Mary of the Snows in Otter Lake was the “First Mountain Church of the Syracuse Diocese,” to be erected by summer residents. On July 16, of that year it was dedicated in a solemn ceremony.

In 2007, realizing that the church was in bad need of repair after the long hard winters had taken their toll, a group of year-round and summer residents began planning for renovations.

With donations and volunteer help with restorations, and the repairs made by the Community Service Group of Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy, who painted the church interior, the foundation, replaced the ceiling and the belfry, the church is now beautifully restored and ready to celebrate its special Anniversary.

Local veterinarian: Cases of Lyme Disease on rise in North Country by Dr. Charles Allen Otter Lake Veterinary Clinic

As most people in the North Country are quickly learning, Lyme disease is now a concern for dogs and people who venture outdoors in our area.

Fifteen years ago, the only cases of Lyme disease came from outside our area. New England, the Hudson River Valley, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were hot spots and remain so.

We have now joined these areas as we have diagnosed approximately 300 cases at our three clinics in the last 10 years.

Since we have started vaccinating for Lyme (and more people have chosen to do so), we are seeing fewer new cases.

Prevention of Lyme disease is accomplished by vaccination, quick tick removal and tick prevention with various products such as Frontline. Continue reading
