46 Luv Balloons: Ongoing Columbus Day tradition in Old Forge

Among the roster of high energy, traditional Columbus Day weekend activities in Old Forge—the parade, alumni soccer game, and soccer tournament—is a more somber event held at the Old Forge lakefront: the “46 Luv Balloons” launch.

The launch is held in memoriam of Matt Girouard and Craig Sears, local boys who lost their lives in an alcohol-related accident on October 11, 2009.

Balloon ceremony: Friends and family pay tribute to Matt and Craig

On Friday, October 11th, friends and family came from all over to gather and send off 46 balloons with notes tied to the strings to honor the lives of Matthew Girouard and Craig Sears.

“I love seeing all the kids come together on this weekend,” said Beth Tickner, a close friend of Gisele Kress, mother of Girouard.

“It amazes me how many people came into each others’ lives because of them,” she said.

This is the third year, on Columbus Day weekend, that Gisele organized the event at the lakefront.
