DEC reminder: Application deadline nears for deer hunting permits

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced Monday that hunters should apply for deer management permits (DMPs) this week, ahead of the October 1 deadline.

Hunters are eligible to apply for up to two deer management permits once they have secured a hunting license.

This allows them to harvest antlerless deer to keep deep populations in line with established objectives, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens said. Continue reading

DEC and State Parks release Open Space Plan; goals include promoting and enhancing state lands as tourist destinations

Public comments accepted till Dec. 17; Public Hearings to be held statewide

The 2014 Open Space Conservation Draft Plan for New York State was released on Wednesday for public comment through December 17, with public hearings to be held statewide.

The plan guides State Environmental Protection Fund investments in open space protection.

It was released by Department of Environmental Conser-vation (DEC) Commis-sioner Joe Martens and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) Commissioner Rose Harvey.  Continue reading

Ad’k Council releases its annual State of Park report, concludes that Adirondack Park is ‘far from finished’

The Adirondack Council released its State of the Park report for 2014 on Wednesday, September 3, giving a detailed account of the accomplishments, major challenges, and disappointments from local, state and federal officials’ actions affecting the Park over the past year.

The best ways for government officials to help the Adirondack Park would be with significant new investments in clean water, infrastructure and invasive species controls, plus science-based reform of the rules and regulations for development, the report concluded. Continue reading

New regulations seek to prevent spread of invasive species in NYS

DEC and Agriculture Markets looking to curb harm to natural resources


 

New state regulations will prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species and help to preserve New York’s ecosystems, state Department of Environ-mental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced Wednesday.

The regulations are the latest step in the state’s efforts to combat invasive species.

DEC urges New Yorkers not to disturb fawns, other young wildlife

New Yorkers should keep their distance and not disturb newborn fawns or other young wildlife, as many animals are in the peak season for giving birth, according to Stephen Litwhiler of the New York State Department of Environ-mental Conservation (DEC), who issued the caution on Thursday.100_0381***

It is not unusual to see a young bird crouched in the yard or a young rabbit in the flower garden, both apparently abandoned.

DEC releases draft species management plan for black bears

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) released a draft species management plan for black bears on Thursday, and will be accepting public comments on it through February 21, 2014.

Black bears are a very popular wildlife species among the general public, but can pose significant challenges when the bears become too abundant or are acting boldly in populated areas.1007bear1
