Town of Webb: DEC mitigates acid rain effects, reintroducing brook trout

As part a collaborative effort to mitigate the impact of acid rain and restore brook trout to the Adirondacks, state helicopters delivered 80 tons of lime to an acidified pond in the Five Ponds Wilderness Area in the Town of Webb, according to New York State Department of Environ-mental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Judy Drabicki.

Approximately 40 DEC staff and New York State Police helicopter crews conducted the liming operation on March 10, 12 and 13, she said.  Continue reading

Emerald Ash Boorer infestation spreading; DEC forms new task force

The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) established the Capital District Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Task Force to help fight and slow the spread of the destructive insect, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced.

EAB continues to spread with recent infestations found in the City of Albany, the Town of Colonie, the City of Watervliet, and the City of Troy.  Continue reading

DEC seeks to improve Mountain Bike Trail System in Moose River Plains; amendment meeting scheduled Thursday, December 18 at Raquette Lake

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is seeking comments to amend the Moose River Plains Wild Forest (MRPWF) Unit Management Plan to improve its mountain bike trail system.

“The 2011 Unit Management Plan called for DEC to create a working group consisting of mountain bikers, local governments and other interested parties to develop a comprehensive mountain bike plan for Moose River Plains,” said Regional Director Robert Stegemann.  Continue reading

DEC offers special camping gift-card package for holidays

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is offering a two-day “Wilderness Bundle” outdoor gift package, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens has announced.

On both Black Friday, November 28, and Cyber Monday, December 1, anyone who purchases a $50 DEC camping gift card will receive a bonus additional $25 camping gift card, a one-year subscription to the New York State Conservationist magazine, and a copy of the New York Wildlife Viewing Guide. Forest Ranger Search & Rescue responds to lost hiker situation in the Town of Inlet

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers conducted a Search and Rescue mission in the Town of Inlet on September 28.

At 5:15 p.m., the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office per State Police Communi-cations Section in Albany, contacted DEC Dispatch in Ray Brook requesting assistance for a lost hiking party at Queer Lake in the Town of Inlet.
