Herkimer County eligible for storm help

Herkimer County was recently added to the list of counties eligible for federal assistance as a result of Hurricane Irene, and State Senator James L. Seward is reminding residents and businesses to apply in the wake of Irene and Lee.

“I encourage those who have suffered damage to apply with FEMA as soon as possible to begin the assistance process,” Seward said.

Residents and business owners who sustained losses can begin the process at www.Disaster

Assistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-3362.

Seward also commended the announcement of an appliance grant program that will help cover the costs of replacing vital household appliances such as refrigerators, boilers washing machines and furnaces, damaged by the recent flooding.

“This rebate program will cover most if not all the costs of new equipment purchased helping people stay in their homes and return to life as usual as soon as possible,” he said.

The program will be administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) with funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Purchases must be for replacements that are not covered by insurance .

The grant program will continue until funding runs out.

LETTER: More Bigfoot tracks, sightings

Dear Weekly Adirondack Editors:

Most recently, more evidence has been received by the “F and J Bigfoot Research Team” in New York State and Vermont.

Many Bigfoot sightings have been reported in the Whitehall, NY and Vermont areas as well as here in Noblesboro, NY, North Lake, and the Town of Ohio this past week.

Our research team has found ten “Bigfoot Tracks” within the past week as well as a photo of a Bigfoot photographed by myself, Adirondack Jack Leach, while out fishing for a brook trout in the North Lake area on August 24, 2011.

The accompanying photograph was taken at one hundred feet away with a small pocket camera!

A close-up photo reveals a “Bigfoot” with a cone-shaped head, two huge muscular legs, a hump back and a long hanging arm with a heavy dark brown fur.

Butler supports state re-destricting reform

Legislators in Albany, including Assemblyman Marc Butler, representative for the 117th Assembly District, are calling for a special legislative session to reform the State’s re-districting process for the coming 2012 elections.

Assemblyman Butler signed on to support a drive by ReShapeNY to have the district boundary lines impartially drawn by an independent commission.

The plan calls for a fair and objective criterion through which, according to ReShapeNY, allows for vigorous public input during the process.

“The issue is very critical, as the composition of the respective legislative houses has a direct impact on the state’s policy decisions, the distribution of resources, and the composition and leadership of critical committees,” Assemblyman Butler said.

Currently, the state legislators, subject to gubernatorial approval, draw the lines for State Assembly, Senate and Congres-sional seats every ten years following the census.

ReShapeNY said that 184 of the legislature’s 212 members have pledged their support for a more independent process of drawing district lines.

The organization said that this unprecedented and overwhelming level of support for redistricting reform demands action before more time passes without the necessary reforms that are supported by the legislature and the general public.
