Big Moose Community Chapel unveils its new historical designation marker

A marker indicating that the Big Moose Community Chapel has been listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings was unveiled on Sunday, July 27th.

Now celebrating its 83rd year, the Chapel at 1544 Big Moose Road north of Eagle Bay was listed on both the state and national registers in 2012.

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation of Syracuse provided the funds for the marker.

Chapel opens at Big Moose

Summer services at the Big Moose Chapel summer season have begun. Rev. Dr. Richard McCaughey will officiate the Sunday 9:30 and 11 a.m. services throughout the months of July and August.

Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m. and child care is available at both services.

Rustic Riders to play at Big Moose Chapel

The Rustic Riders will appear in concert at the Big Moose Chapel at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 10th.

The Rustic Riders includes vocalist and guitarist Lisa Meissner, percussionist Klaus Meissner, and Bill Chamberlain, Jeff Couture, Dan Salpaugh and David Katz  who round out the group playing banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and bass.

They have played across the North Country, Vermont and New Hampshire and love interacting with audiences.

There is no admission fee, but a free will offering will be accepted to defray costs.

In addition to the Saturday evening show, The Rustic Riders will perform during worship services at the Chapel at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 11th.

The Chapel is located at 1544 Big Moose Road, six miles from Eagle Bay. All are invited.

Big Moose Chapel receives historic registers certificate

The Big Moose Community Chapel achieved a listing on both the state and national registers of historic places in August 2012.

On Sunday, July 28  at the 9:30 a.m. service an official from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation presented a certificate with the dates of the listing to Chapel President Barbara Morgan and Chapel Historian Richard Williams.

Williams, Chapel clerk and historian, helped prepare the application to the state.

Travis Bowman, representative of the state office, made brief comments after giving the framed certificate to the Chapel.

This important designation reinforces the determination of the trustees to maintain the Chapel as a distinctive example of Adirondack architecture. Continue reading

Big Moose Chapel Bazaar set Aug. 3

The annual Big Moose Community Chapel Bazaar will take place—rain or shine—on Saturday, August 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chapel, which is located five miles west of Eagle Bay on Big Moose Road.

Family entertainer Fritz Henry will perform two free shows at 10:45 a.m. and noon behind the Chapel lakeside.

His two sets will include classic children’s songs as well as sing-along originals and folk and pop classics for the young at heart.

The Chapel is celebrating 82 years of worship in the Adirondacks, and the bazaar is known for offering unique Adirondack and holiday crafts, “moosey” items of all sorts, and the aromatic balsam pillows which are created at the Balsam Bee held a week before the bazaar.

Big Moose Chapel to hold Balsam Bee on July 27th

The annual Big Moose Community Chapel Balsam Bee will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, July 27, at the Chapel.

All are welcome to participate in this local Adirondack tradition of making the balsam pillows which will be sold at the Chapel’s annual bazaar on August 3rd.

Balsam pillows were first made at the Chapel in the 1930s by a women’s group called “The Willing Workers,” and today the Bee welcomes everyone of all ages.

Jobs include grinding fresh-cut balsam, and stuffing and sewing the pillows. No experience is necessary, and all are invited for a family-friendly evening.

The Chapel is located five miles west of Eagle Bay on Big Moose Road.

Big Moose Chapel Plans

Foliage service

Guest minister Reverend Vernon Lee will lead a Fall Foliage Service at the Big Moose Community Chapel on Sunday, September 25 at 10 a.m. All are invited to enjoy coffee and cookies following the service.

The chapel’s annual Christmas Candlelight Service will be held on Sunday, December 18 at 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
