An open letter to the community Direct your dollars carefully: Not all pink ribbon ventures created equally

As many of you already know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And as a breast cancer survivor I am asking you to make sure to THINK BEFORE YOU PINK!

Recently there have been a number of news reports and print articles alerting the public to the abuse of pink ribbons on products and how much of the purchase price of those products actually benefits breast cancer research or related initiatives.

Recently I read a solicitation in a local paper offering the opportunity to pay tribute to those whose lives have been lost or those who continue to battle with breast cancer.

The fee which the newspaper says will “show your support for a cure” is $20.

As someone with a sincere interest in pink ribbon initiatives, I called the local office for more information. I asked which research or support group would benefit from the monies collected.

The local office was unable to answer that question. They referred me to the newspaper’s corporate office in Amsterdam. Continue reading

Knotty Pine: Meet restaurant’s new owners at October 15th Open House

Kristen and Travis Fata, new owners of the Knotty Pine Restaurant on Route 28 in Thendara, will host an Open House on Tuesday, October 15 from 5 to 10 p.m.

The couple, who took ownership of the landmark restaurant in June, said they look forward to taking some time to visit with the local community in a casual atmosphere following the busy summer and post-Columbus Day holiday weekend.

“We have gotten to meet a lot of new folks since we opened and we appreciate their support. We look forward to seeing them and meeting others, who like ourselves, can take advantage of the quieter time of year,” Kristen said. Continue reading

Services held for Joan M. Smith, 79

Joan M. Smith, 79 of Florida and Eagle Bay passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. She was born in Utica on Tuesday, February 20, 1934 the daughter of Alexander and Lucy (Wendzel) Mieczkowski and attended local schools.

She was a former resident of New Jersey where she was employed as a Civil Servant with the Borough of Ringwood. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagle Bay Volunteer Fire & Hose Company.  Continue reading

Services held for John B. Isley, 60

John B. Isley, 60, a lifelong resident of Woodgate, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Utica, after complications of heart disease.

Mr. Isley was president of North Country Communications, an advertising firm that was well known for its over forty year history in the local radio and newspaper industry.  He was currently Deputy Supervisor for the Town of Forestport and had served as town historian for many years.John Isley

John was born in Constableville on July 7, 1953, a son of Harold D. and Margaret Lane Isley. He graduated from the Town of Webb Schools, Old Forge, and began his career in radio broadcasting at WBRV, Boonville at the age of thirteen. Continue reading

Country, bluegrass and western music performance coming to View, Oct. 18th

Country/bluegrass performers Amy Gallatin and The Stillwaters will perform at View on Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Gallatin has been a staple on the acoustic music scene since her arrival in New England from Montana in 1993 with her heartfelt vocals and quality song selections.

Veteran bluegrass performer Williams is known for his masterful touch on the resophonic guitar during his tenure with White Mountain Bluegrass.

The band is enhanced by the addition of Roger’s son J.D., whose musical style complements his father’s perfectly; and by veteran bassist Levenson, formerly with Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys, among others.

The concert is appropriate for music lovers of all ages. Wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the performance.

Tickets are $15 for non-members and $12 for members of View and can be purchased online at www.ViewArts.org or by calling View at (315) 369-6411, ext. 201. The box office is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

As town supervisor you were allowed two appoint-ments

Appointing yourself budget officer was one of them

That assured that you would have control of the funds

and the highway department budget got way overdone

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, October 1, at 6:30 p.m., where it took the following action. (This is a capsule summary and does not represent official minutes.)

Approved the Minutes of September 17, 2013 meeting.

Approved the Warrants and Claims.

Approved the Treasurer’s Report for August 2013.

Approved the Committee on Special Education Recommenda-tions.

Approved the Board Policy 413 – Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).

Approved the appointment of the following winter coaches for the 2013-2014 school year:
