Elementary and junior high school students at the Town of Webb School will be greeted by new English teacher Megan Plumley when school resumes on Wednesday, September 4th.

Plumley will teach sixth and seventh grade English, seventh grade reading, and kindergarten through eighth grade computer classes.

She says she has always had a love for teaching and is excited about starting the school year and meeting the students.

Plumley went to Mohawk Valley Community College and completed her undergraduate degree at SUNY Oneonta where she earned two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in English and the other in Adolescent Education.

She has one more semester until she completes her Master’s Degree in Education Technology and Emerging Media from Canisius College in Buffalo. She is completing that degree fully online.

Last year she taught sixth grade writing as a long term substitute teacher and did a semester of student teaching in English at the middle and high school at Adirondack Central School in Boonville.

She is very interested in technology and how to integrate it into the classroom.

“Now everything is digital and you need to be well trained in it to be college- and career-ready,” she said.

Plumley grew up and continues to live in Taberg. She is engaged to be married next year.

Having historical family roots in Long Lake, she said Old Forge is a great fit for her. She has done quite a bit of camping in the Adirondacks and enjoys fishing and waterfowl hunting.

Plumley’s official appointment is subject to school board approval at its Tuesday, September 4 meeting.

Finding yourself in sticky situation en route to favorite swimming hole

Every eleven year old boy who grew up in my world had a couple of great swimming holes to visit. Some were used for cooling off, others for cannonball contests. And some were simply used for swimming.

The days in late August were growing shorter and night temperatures were dipping into the forties. I was running out of days warm enough to enjoy those swimming holes.

However, there was one great place I liked to visit on chilly mornings.

I dragged an old tire tube from the back of the garage, boosted it with some air, and headed out through the lingering fog with my dog Mutt trotting along.

I push-rolled the old rubber tube in front of me by slapping my towel over it. The old tube kicked up pretty high as it bounced over a large protruding rock in the road.

An update from Doc & Judy Foley

It’s hard to believe a month has passed since our unfortunate incident. The healing process continues both mentally and physically.

Judy has made great progress and is expected to be released from Sunnyview sometime during the first week of September. She will then receive outpatient therapy at one of the Utica facilities. Doc is out and about and seems to be improving daily.

Our month passed by quickly due to all the prayers, phone calls, visits, cards, and gifts of food, flowers, candy, books and even pictures, and expressions of concern from this wonderful and caring community.

With appreciation,

Doc and Judy Foley

Mailboat raised after sinking on Old Forge Pond

Paul Littman, owner of Old Forge Lake Cruises, said surveyors are working to determine what caused the sinking of the mailboat President Harrison, on Friday, August 23rd.

Littman discovered the submerged vessel at its Old Forge Pond location at approximately 8:30 a.m. Though he said it appears there was a leak in the exhaust, he is awaiting official word as to the cause.

Letter to the Editor Forestport bridge numbers disputed

To the Editor:

The bridge cost figures outlined by Town Supervisor Mr. Hasenauer’s campaign ad in last week’s August 22, 2013 Weekly Adirondack are incorrect. Also the railing mentioned as “left out of the contract” was not mistakenly omitted from the design package, but rather not included per the direction given by the Town.

The Town voted for us to proceed with replacing the bridges. It has been our goal to complete the bridges in a timely fashion and at the least cost to our community tax payers as possible.
