The nose is as good as a dye test when septic systems fail

All in the same week, three new separate residential septic systems on Big Moose Lake alone were being reviewed by engineers, and by this office.

Two of the situations were failed systems and one was because the property owner wanted to do the replacement now, on his terms, and not be faced with an emergency replacement.

In all three situations, the property owners are doing the right thing.

At the first sign of trouble, they called their favorite contractors and made arrangements to get what they have pumped out.

Then they visually inspected what can be seen. This usually ends up having someone come in with a small excavator… unless you have a really strong back and don’t mind shoveling for a while.

One of the systems had the old metal tank disintegrated, totally rusted out. The baffles were so rusty, they were gone too.

Woods Around Inlet: August berry picking adventure not for everyone

It was the first week of August of 1977 and I and every other 11 year old boy I knew were out in the woods picking berries. I had been checking my favorite berry picking locations for a few weeks.

And when I woke up one morning I just knew that was the day my dog Mutt and I would be taking a few plastic buckets out for an adventure.

Mutt seemed just as pleased as I that the berries were fully ready for harvest.

She almost toppled me over trying to get out the living room door as I slipped on my sneaks.

When I stepped outside my nose was filled with the smell of ready-to-pick fruit from the plants that surrounded our home.

I searched around for some old buckets and found a couple I had previously used to collect worms, frogs, crayfish, or minnows in.

The bottoms looked kind of crusty so I gave them a good scrubbing with an old wooden horse brush.

Save Our Strand Committee says thank you

The Save our Strand Committee wants to give a great big THANK YOU to all the people, businesses and organizations that helped make the Strand 90th Anniversary Gala a great success. More than $30,000 was raised from ticket sales, auction items, photos and additional donations, putting the Committee well on its way in meeting the digital conversion fund goal.

With support through the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) and previous donations, the Committee is well over halfway to its goal of $150,000. Additional planned events include the Songs for the Strand at View at 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, and the Calypso’s Cove Charity Go-Kart Race community fundraiser in September.

Bob and Helen have indicated that their plan is to begin conversion around the end of October and beginning of November. The Strand has started to see movies that are available in digital format only such as Jobs, the movie about Apple founder Steve Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher.

Perfect weather if you’re a fly variety, but where are the monarchs

It may be late July but it feels almost fall-like  as temperatures got down in the low 40s a couple mornings. This kept the bugs down until nearly noon one day and until 10 a.m. the next.

Squaw Lake

Squaw Lake

The black flies have had a new hatch and they have been pretty pesky to say the least. With all the rain the mosquitoes will be with us for most of the remaining summer.

The deerflies were out one day as I killed over 25 while walking just a couple miles. I never did eliminate them.

That was on a trip into Beaver Lake in the Plains where I cut out the trail while pulling my canoe to the lake. The loons heard me coming and were calling even before I saw the lake.

I canoed down to the nest site and picked up the egg chips. They have nested on the same little bog for over thirty years. The entire west end of the lake is covered with white water lilies.

When you go down the lake the entire shoreline is a ribbon of white. The moose would have salad here for the whole summer, but I never see any tracks around the pond.
