Tax Time Questions with Independent Tax Preparer Deborah Ritz

What are the requirements for filing an IRS tax return? Question: How do I determine if I have to file a tax return?

The requirement to file depends in part on your filing status, age, and gross income. If you are single, you must file a tax return if your gross income was at least $9,750 ($19,500 if married and filing jointly.)

If you are over 65 the gross income requirement raises to $11,200 ($21,800 if married and filing jointly and both filers are over 65.)

The IRS provides a chart in the instruction booklets for the 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ.

However you will have to file a return to receive any money that was withheld on any type of income or to receive any refundable credits such as the Earned Income Credit, Additional Child Tax Credit, New York State Property tax credit or the NYS Emergency Volunteer credit.

Question: Where is my refund?

A television crew from WPBS in Watertown was at McCauley Mountain on Thursday, February 28 to film an episode of their new adventure show Xpedition Outdoors.

The program showcases outdoor adventures throughout Northern New York that people of all skill levels can participate in.

The show is the brainchild of host Chris Lashomb who said his motive is to explore the Adirondacks and Northern New York through the eyes of the average individual.

The McCauley episode of Xpedition Outdoors will feature a ski lesson on Mighty-Mite, followed by footage of  a typical day on the slopes.

Lashomb, who grew up skiing, said he had never been to McCauley before, but was very much looking forward to checking it out.

“I skied a lot in Lake Placid and Titus Mountain, but I haven’t experienced much of the central Adirondacks. So I am really excited to be here and to add that to my list of great outdoor activities that I have experienced,” he said.

Throughout the episodes, Lashomb and his crew hopes to experience all the Adirondacks has to offer—from skiing McCauley, to whitewater rafting in the early spring, and everything there is to do during the summer months.

“We are going to do things that the average person—and sometimes the whole family— can do. We are going to focus on activities that you don’t have to be an expert to do—we just want people to get out and enjoy them,” he said.

The show, which is set to air this fall, will also have an interactive component to it where viewers will have the opportunity to submit short video clips of themselves and adventures they would like to see the show cover.

Viewers will vote on the top finalists and a viewer’s choice guest will be featured on each of the 13 episodes. To learn more about Xpedition Outdoors, visit its Facebook page at facebook.com/XpeditionOutdoors.
