Talkin’ Code with Andrew Getty

When it comes to sprinkler requirements, it’s about saving lives

OMG! A Sprinkler System?

The concept of sprinkler systems in buildings has been around for a long, long time—long before most states had any formalized building codes.

Certainly, they were more common in cities, high rise structures or buildings that had proven to be potentially life threatening in the event of a real emergency.

Through the years, time has proven that sprinklers save lives.

It is safe to say that there has never been loss of life due to fire in a structure that had a legally, properly installed and maintained sprinkler system.

Those are all keys words… legally, properly installed and maintained.

Every year, for over thirty years, the concept of requiring a sprinkler system in a single family dwelling has been one of many potential amendments in the NYS Building Codes.

There are many cities, and even states, that have adopted such code requirements years ago.

The year 2002 was a huge year in New York State with the adoption of the International Building Code [IBC].  Continue reading

Herr-Story by Charles Herr: A look at local days gone by

Before there was Inlet II: James Galvin and the Fulton Chain Club

PART FOUR

The 1891 prospectus (written by Ephraim Myers) announced that Fred Hess’s new hotel soon to be completed would be the terminus for those taking the steamers from Old Forge after departing from Dr. Webb’s new railroad.

Membership was limited to 120 members who would pay $500, providing them a lot for a camp, use of the lodges and a revenue share of the timber harvested by Hess.

Though similar in policy to the neighboring Adirondack League Club, it failed to attract members.

By August 1892, James Galvin began subdividing the shore lots on the tract’s lakes and advertised one-acre lots on Fourth Lake for $200, promoting the region as a health resort.

The extension of Dr. Webb’s railroad to Fulton Chain (Thendara) in July 1892 brought an increase of travelers through the tract and the need for accommodating them.

Charles Bennett of the Antlers (Raquette Lake) began a stage and steamer line from Fourth Lake to Brown’s Tract Inlet and purchased the right of way from Galvin through the tract’s lands for carries between the lakes.

He was reported to have also purchased lots on Sixth Lake.

Fred Hess’s hotel opened in 1893 on Fourth Lake’s shore at the inlet.  Continue reading

View program to examine region’s aquatic ecosystem

Aquatic ecologist Scott George, will present a lecture at View on Sunday, February 17 on the effects Tropical Storm Irene had on Upper Esopus Creek in the Catskill Mountains.

The free lecture, part of View’s Science on Sundays programming,  begins at 2 p.m. and will be held at the Henry M. Kashiwa Eco Gallery.

George, an employee at the USGS New York Water Science Center in Troy, will discuss the unexpected effects the storm had on the aquatic ecosystem of the creek.

The lecture will explore the impact of the catastrophic flooding on the Upper Esopus Creek basin and the impact on the fish community, with a specific emphasis on the brown trout population.

According to George’s research, although the flooding reached 100-year recurrence intervals in some locations and devastated many communities in the area, the fish community was not affected in the manner expected.

Nation’s lawmakers need to break the habit of collective inaction

Climate change is upon us. There is little credible dispute about this, throughout our political society. If you have a word of complaint with this assumption, swing by the information center in Old Forge and look at our snowfall totals for the past 40 years.

What you will find is a steady decline—even dipping below 100 inches for a couple winters recently.

We have all noticed the weak winters of late. Even this one, with fairly steady snowmobile trail conditions, came with some major thaws. Snow doesn’t come like it used to.

There is a debate, unfortunately, about how it is affecting us. We live in the mountains! Sure, tough snowfall totals hurt, but maybe the weather will shift yet again and bring fruitful winters in the near future.

The truth of the matter is that global warming demands our attention.

It is affecting our lives and our economy in Old Forge, just as it is affecting the lives of people hit by Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina, people in tornado prone areas, people on coastal areas that are too familiar with monsoons, and people who have been devastated by recent droughts.
