Gary Lee marks 25th anniversary of local outdoors column

This marks my 25th year of writing to you folks about the natural world around us, beginning with the newly-launched Express and now for the Weekly Adirondack. I missed only one column in all those years when I was out in Yellowstone Wildfire Complex that first year in 1988. Snail mail was slow in getting it to Express founder and editor Pat Russell in Old Forge.

Everyone tells me I should write a book featuring highlights of some of my columns, but I tell them I’ve already written a book, and it’s about Adirondack Birding.

To follow is my inaugural column which appeared on July 12, 1988. Don’t take everything as if it was written today as lots have changed in 25 years.

Enjoy boating this summer while keeping yourself and others safe

With summer here and long warm days ahead many people will be headed out on our numerous bodies of water to enjoy a day of boating.

Whether it is a lazy day on a sail boat, an adventure in a canoe or an exhilarating afternoon water skiing there is no better place to enjoy yourself than on the waterways of upstate New York.

Certainly though, many things should be considered before you set out.

Staying safe while on the water is a top concern and must be taken extremely seriously.

Before even leaving the dock some very important pieces of safety equipment should be on board your vessel.

First and foremost, you need a life preserver, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD), for each person on board.

Fashion models Karen Mitchell, Linda Gibbs and Joni Dyer

The Women’s Fellowship group of Niccolls Memorial Presbyterian Church in Old Forge will be hosting its annual Fashions by the Lake Fashion Show and luncheon at North Woods Inn on Fourth Lake, on Wednesday, July 17 at noon.

The fashions will be provided by local shops and modeled by year-round and summer residents of the area. This year, the theme is “Family Fun in the Adirondacks” as portrayed by the myriad of clothing styles offered by local shops.

Profits from the event will support bone marrow transplant research. Continue reading

St. William’s Chicken BBQ & Silent Auction set July 28

The annual Chicken BBQ and Silent Auction at St. William’s on Long Point in Raquette Lake will take place on Sunday, July 28 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Free transportation from the village dock will begin at 12:30 p.m. and will run continuously throughout the afternoon. Guests can enjoy lunch, or take a “to go” chicken dinner with them.

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10. The Silent Auction will be held in the restored historic Church with lot items donated by friends and local business owners.

Memorial service slated July 27 for Roland Christy

A memorial mass for Roland Christy, Sr., who passed away April 24, will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in Old Forge on Saturday, July 27th at 5 p.m.

A celebration of Roland’s life will immediately follow the service.

The family invites all to come and share their stories, fond memories and pictures of Roland.

A reception will follow the celebration in the church’s social room.

Dr. Dick Lindsay will share a power point presentation of photos, showcasing the local community and its members that he has compiled over the years from his and his family’s collection, at the Old Forge Library on Sunday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m.

AARP driving course slated

An AARP driving course will be held at the Inlet Senior Center on Monday and Tuesday, July 22 and 23 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. both days.

The cost of the course is $17 for members and $19 for non-members.

Registration is available by calling Bob Seager at (315) 392-3808. The Senior Center is located at the Inlet Town Hall.
