Webb School Senior Spotlight

Austin Down interested in construction, business studies at college

Senior, Austin Down, has been a student of the Town of Webb School since kindergarten. He plans to attend college after graduation to study Construction Management or Business. At the time of the interview, he was considering applying to Castleton State College in Vermont, SUNY/Delhi and Alfred State.

Down gained an interest in construction after working with his father, a local contractor, for the last two years. His favorite classes are with technology teacher Steve Bradish because he enjoys the hands-on instruction of building.

He has a passion for alpine skiing and has been involved in the local Polar Bear Ski Club since he was a youngster. Last winter he attended the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid during the winter term from December 2011 to the middle of March 2012.

He is a member of the school’s alpine ski team which recently took the Section III Alpine Boys’ Championship title and was named individual boys’ sectional champion.

Down has also participated in soccer and baseball throughout his high school career.

He is a member of Key Club and Student Council and he plays trombone in the school band.

When not in school his interests include riding his motorcycle or his dirt bike. During the summer months he works for his father’s construction company and he also mows lawns.

In comparing the Town of Webb School to a larger school system, he said, “I like it here and I’m close with a lot of friends. I’ll miss it. It’s pretty easy going, but I want to move somewhere else for a little while, maybe out west.”

He is the son of Tom and Tracey Down of Thendara and he has one brother, Corey, who is a junior at the Town of Webb School.
