Services held for Dorcas C. Shaw, 97

Dorcas C. Shaw, 97, of Broadalbin died Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital in  Amsterdam.

She was born in Saratoga Springs on February 14, 1915, a daughter of Beroth and Anna Daniels Crapo and was a 1933 graduate of Broadalbin High School.

Dorcas received a BA from the State University College at Plattsburgh in 1973.

Dorcas was a member of the Broadalbin United Methodist Church and shared a special bond with this church as her father pastored there for 16 years.

She was active in church administration and with its choir.

When her husband was principal in Long Lake and then Ellenburg schools, Dorcas was employed at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake and subsequently attended college in Plattsburgh.

When her husband later taught in Old Forge, Dorcas enjoyed attending art classes at the arts center there. 

Throughout the years they continued to maintain their residence in Broadalbin.

When her husband retired they traveled extensively throughout the United States.

Dorcas was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a longtime member of the DAR.

She loved to read, enjoyed gardening, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered as a selfless volunteer and a devoted mother and wife.

She was married to Robert H. Shaw on June 8, 1936. He died April 11, 2007. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara Crapo and Gertrude Costine; and a brother, Daniels B. Crapo.

Survivors include two sons, Philip (Joanna) Shaw of San Antonio, TX and David (Valentine) Shaw of Simsbury, CT; a daughter, Barbara (William) Allen of Saratoga Springs; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held December 29 at the United Methodist Church in Broadalbin. Burial will be held in the spring at the Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dorcas’s name may be made to the United Methodist Church, 65 North Main Street, Broadalbin, NY 12025.
