Webb board considers Mountainman one-day Stand-Up Paddle race, event

Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company requested that a portion of the lakefront near Pied Piper be used for a one-day Stand-Up Paddleboard event on Saturday, July 21.

Taking place at the event would be paddle activities that include free demos and a Stand-Up Paddle race. No sales would happen at the lakefront, according to Mountainman.

Some town board members said they support the idea and the event, but would like more details, particularly as to the number of “pop-ups” that would be assembled on the lakefront. Supervisor Ted Riehle said that information could be acquired for the board’s meeting on Monday, July 16, when a final vote would be taken.Last summer a free kayak demo event was held adjacent to the beach at the former town boat launch.

Unloading and access issues caused Mountainman owner, John Nemjo, to seek the new spot for this summer’s event, which is geared toward Stand-Up Paddleboards, he said.

Most of the demos would be conducted at the small beach at the end of the Pied Piper boardwalk next to the Water’s Edge Inn, Nemjo said.

A lifeguard will be on duty, according to Nemjo.

The race that is planned will start at that location at 11:30 a.m. and proceed up the Channel to First Lake and back.

Nemjo said he expects 20 to 30 racers to participate. A support boat, lifeguards and kayak assistants will be on duty, he added.

The demos will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
