Town of Webb Board considers changes to Paddlefest contract

The Town of Webb Board discussed an extension of the contract period of Paddlefest, an outdoor kayak and canoe expo held annually at Old Forge’s lakefront, to three years from its current one-year, at the request of John Nemjo, owner of Mountainman Outdoor Supply Co., which conducts the event.

All board members stated support for the event, but at least two, Councilwomen Kate Russell and Mary Brophy-Moore, said they were hesitant about committing to a three-year contract.

Councilwoman Russell noted the continual growth of the event, which she said could compel some changes to the contract before a scheduled three-year renewal.Councilman J.B. Herron said he has focused attention on concerns about the event in the past and has come to terms with its realities.

Specifically, he would like to keep the road open to public traffic along the lakefront during the event, but realizes the event’s scope precludes that from happening.

Another concern had been a failure to allow an adequate fire lane in the event of an emergency. That issue has successfully rectified by the event organizers, Herron said.

Councilman Herron also pointed out that some of the rationale for the three-year request is John Nemjo’s desire to start his planning and marketing in a timely manner for the subsequent year’s event.

Herron indicated that swift action by the board could alleviate that concern in the absence of an extended contract.

Councilwoman Moore asked that a decision be tabled until the July meeting, so she could have the opportunity to study the existing contract.

Councilman Herron proposed that the existing contract be approved for next year immediately as a courtesy to Nemjo.

Herron pointed out that the current contract has been a work in progress for several years, and as such has been subject to considerable scrutiny and tweaking.

The document worked well as a structure for the event in 2012, and the board received no complaints, he said.

The board resolved to implement the 2012 Paddlefest contract for 2013 on a four-member vote, with Brophy-Moore abstaining.
