Webb Varsity skiers capture firsts in team competitions by Beth Tickner, Guest Contributor

AMPLE HARDWARE: Webb Boys Team places 1st in Slalom and Giant Slalom

In past years, Section 3 Alpine High School Ski Teams, which includes the Town of Webb, have been invited to participate in Lake Placid and Saranac Lake’s Winter  Carnival, even though we are outside their section.

Since this year’s event coincided with the Empire State Winter Games at Lake Placid over the weekend of February 2nd through 5th, our Varsity Alpine Ski Team was lucky enough to be able to take part in the historical event.

For Alpine races, sections are combined for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it takes a lot of people to run a race and there are limited times and places to compete. So, in this instance the racers were awarded their medals and trophies based on all the sections’ results. Then, when computing results for our Section 3 finishes, the other sections’ results were simply removed from the equation.

Senior McKenzie Liddle led the Webb girlsOur varsity boys and girls teams’ journey to the competitions began on Thursday, February 2, when they boarded a school bus at 7 a.m. They were greeted by Barb Murdock’s familiar and happy face, which is customary as she faithfully transports our children to all their races.

Our varsity boys and girls teams’ journey to the competitions began on Thursday, February 2, when they boarded a school bus at 7 a.m. They were greeted by Barb Murdock’s familiar and happy face, which is customary as she faithfully transports our children to all their races.

The gesture alone makes the kids feel lucky even before they hit the slopes. How many other school bus drivers keep track of the kids’ running orders AND bakes them all sorts of delicious treats for every single competition?

After a two-and-a-half hour bus ride, the kids arrived at Whiteface Mountain to compete in the Giant Slalom event.

Following an icy day on the slopes, Coach Tom Down got all the kids registered for the Opening Ceremonies, and had them fed and delivered on time wearing their Empire State Winter Games attire.

As the athletes representing a wide variety of winter sports marched and skated onto the ice, the support of everyone in the stands resonated throughout the iconic Ice Arena where the legendary “Miracle on Ice” took place during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games.

Since the Giant Slalom was the only event to have taken place at that point of the games, the emcee asked the crowd if they would like to hear the results.

Above the cheering audience, it was announced that local skier Sean Madden of Saranac Lake had placed first.

And those cheers were quickly echoed by the Town of Webb parents as it was announced that Daniel Heroux and West Tickner of Old Forge placed second and third respectively.

The next day the Slalom event took place at Mt. Pisgah in Saranac Lake. Likewise, the Old Forge team was just as successful that day.

Awards were handed out for individual results for the two days as well as team results.

For team placement, you take the top three finishers of each team and total their placements.

The lowest total wins.

For Giant Slalom, the Town of  Webb girls finished in third place with senior McKenzie Liddle, junior Lexie Haehl, and senior Jessica Hannah scoring sixth, tenth, and twelth places, respectiviely.

Cy Barkauskas

The boys took home first place honors with senior Daniel Heroux, junior West Tickner, and freshman Cy Barkauskas scoring second, third, and sixth finishes, respectively.

It should be noted that the boys’ team is deep with strong skiers as Carter Lawrence placed seventh, Corey Down placed eighth, Connor Glasser placed ninth, John Gaffney placed tenth, and Adam Levi placed twelth.

The girls placed first in the Slalom race with McKenzie Liddle, Lexie Haehl and Camry Liddle placing fourth, ninth and eleventh.

The boys once again took first place with West Tickner, Daniel Heroux and Corey Down placing third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

When calculating results for our section, there is no overall combined time winner.

Each run is considered a race and your finish place in each race counts towards your individual results and team’s results towards competing at States.
