Emily K. Hurlbut, 81, passes away

Mrs. Emily (Kolenda) Hurlbut, 81, former resident of Old Forge, and Boonville, and widow of John R., passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home in Albany where she had resided since November 2008.

Emily was born in Clinton on March 5, 1930 and was a daughter of Michael and Katherine Puc Kolenda and was raised in the Town of Schuyler in Herkimer County.On June 2, 1951, Emily was united in marriage with John R. Hurlbut at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Old Forge.

After their wedding, the couple remained in Old Forge where she was employed as a waitress at the Fern’s Restaurant while Mr. Hurlbut was employed as a caretaker for the Bostwick Estate of Thendara.

In 1982, the couple moved their home to Potato Hill Road, near Boonville. For a time, the couple also lived in Alaska where Mr. Hurlbut was employed as a mechanic for the FAA for twenty years.

Later, the couple held managerial positions at Calumet Island, a part of the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River. Mr. Hurlbut passed away on March 13, 2007.

While living in the Boonville area, Emily attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Leyden. Mrs. Hurlbut is survived by daughters, Susan M. Alberson, Carol Ann Smith and her husband, Bernard, all of Delmar, NY; and Dianne Elizabeth Kull, and husband, Randy of Old Forge; and three grandchildren.

In keeping with her wishes, Mrs. Hurlbut willed herself to Medical Science. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Webb School Scholarship Fund.
