Two Polar Bear skiers to compete in Canada

Polar Bear J-4 skiers Cy Barkauskas and Carter Lawrence will be part of the 70-athlete American team that will compete against a Canadian team at the CanAm International Children’s Alpine Ski Races at Mont Tremblant in Quebec from March 31 through April 3.

They qualified for the races following their performances at the Eastern Regional Champion-ships which were held in Waterville Valley, NH from March 19 through 22.

The two were part of the NYS team which consisted of 13 boys and 13 girls.

At the Eastern Regionals, the two boys competed against 13 boys representing each of seven states, a total of 91 male racers.

They participated in training and skill assessments, and competed in one day of slalom racing (2 runs) and one day of giant slalom racing (2 runs).

Cy placed 11th In the slalom and Carter, 16th. In the giant slalom Carter placed 19th and Cy placed 37th.

Following the two-day competition Cy earned a 17th place and Carter, a 30th place to qualify for the American team.

The American team includes the top 30 boys and 30 girls from the Eastern states along with the top 10 skiers from the Atlantic region. The Canadian team includes 10 skiers from the Mid-region, and 30 skiers each representing Ontario and Quebec.

The American team includes 13 New York state athletes.
