Playing to a full crowd in their home gymnasium, the Town of Webb boys varsity basketball team started their season with a victory against Dolgeville on Wednesday, December 2.
This was the team’s first win in three years.
The final score was 71-37, Webb having outscored their opponent 40-15 in the second half.
Thomas Greco, a Webb school alumnus, is the team’s new head coach.
Shane Kimball led Webb in scoring with 23 points, followed by Quentin Lucas and Tyler Fenton, each scoring 16 points.
Bailey Dillon had 12 rebounds, and Cy Barkauskas led the team as the floor general with 6 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.
“The kids have worked so hard, each and every day. Their work has shown, not only in this win, but in all of their three preseason scrimmages,” Greco said.
“Every day we get better as a team. The attitudes of these players are positive in every way, and we’re coming into this season ready to win.”
Greco was an avid basketball player at Webb and contributed to a winning season his 2003 senior year.
Many teammates from that 2003 team traveled to their alma mater on Wednesday to support Greco and the Eskimos.
“A competitive basketball team gives the town something to do over the long winter, and I hope it can bring this town and school together even more,” Greco said.
“Coaching [at Webb] is a dream come true.”
The next boys varsity game is away against Hamilton on Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Their next home game will be against Oriskany the following Friday, December 11 at 7:30 p.m.
“I encourage everyone to come support our team against Oriskany (the favorite to win our section). We may not win, but I assure you we will compete,” Greco said.
