VIEW, the arts center in Old Forge, offers a unique opportunity for the public to tour the interiors of some of the most fabulous camps on the Fulton Chain during its annual House Tour by Boat.
On Saturday, August 15, 20 party barges will depart at 10 a.m. from the Old Forge Lakefront to take passengers to get an exclusive look at the grounds and interiors of the camps that boaters usually only observe from the water.
This year’s tour includes five camps on the Fulton Chain, with Fieldstone Lodge on Fourth Lake as the main attraction.
For the first time ever, this historic great camp, which has been privately owned for 115 years, is available to tour.
This historic estate with provenance and grandeur from the Gilded Age, was built by inventor Harry Marvin, circa 1900.
Marvin was a co-founder of the American Biograph Company and an associate of Thomas A. Edison.
He invented a drill used in mining and perfected an automatic radio tuning system.
Marvin’s son Daniel perished onboard the Titanic, but his daughter-in-law survived as the last woman to leave the Titanic. She returned to reside at Fieldstone.
The property consists of a Main Camp, Lake House, The Lodge, Caretaker’s and North Cabins.
Owners or representatives from each property will be there to share the history, assist with tours and answer questions. Party barges will be provided by gracious volunteers.
This could possibly be the last year of this popular event, so if you have not been able to take advantage of the opportunity in the past, now is your chance.
The tour will take place rain or shine, and there is limited availability. Participants may bring their own refreshments.
Advanced registration is required and the cost is $50 for VIEW members and $60 for the general public. Proceeds benefit VIEW, the arts center in Old Forge.
