The One Square Mile of Hope committee is busy with last minute details as the effort to break the Guinness Record for the largest floating raft of canoes, kayaks and guide boats approaches on Saturday, September 13th.
Inlet Tourism Director Adele Burnett reported that as of Thursday, September 4, over 2,600 boats have registered to participate.
A group of 45 volunteers will be stuffing goody bags for participants at the Inlet Information Office on Monday, September 8th.
Anyone interested in having materials such as a flyer, coupon, business card, trinket, pen, etc. included in the bags should deliver them by no later than 5 p.m. that day.
Burnett would like to remind volunteers to check in with her prior to the event to assure there is sufficient coverage where needed. Those who have volunteered at the 2008 and 2011 should not assume they will be serving in the same capacity this year.
There are particular needs for volunteers to hand out stickers on the barges, help with registration the morning of the event, and to help park cars.
Burnett needs to know who is planning to volunteer and their preference for an assignment, as soon as possible.
She can be contacted at info@inletny.com, (315) 357-5501, or stop by the Inlet Information Office.
To follow are a few other important things participants should know:
1. Everyone registered for this event must sign a waiver before getting on the water.
2. Even if you turned your waiver in in advance, you still need to pick up your packet and shirt. One person may pick up packets and shirts for a group of people as long as all waivers have been turned in.
3. When you pick up your packet, we will assign you a place to park and launch, if you do not already have a plan to park and launch at locations not marked on our map.
4. Packets can be picked up at the Inlet Information Office starting Tuesday, September 9th. The office will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
5. All are encouraged to pick up their packets prior to Saturday morning.
