Old Forge meeting slated: Counties assessing long-term transportation needs

The Herkimer-Oneida Counties Transportation Study (HOCTS) will hold a public meeting for the Long-Range Transportation Plan – 2035 Update for Herkimer and Oneida Counties, in Old Forge on Wednesday, August 13th.

The Long-Range Transpor-ta-tion Plan is a 20-year planning document that identifies transportation needs, regional trends and planned projects.

It provides the framework that guides regional planning, funding and implementation of transportation projects.

Updated every five years, the Plan is responsive to the needs of a broad population and addresses the many elements of the transportation system: highways, bridges, public transit, bicyclists, pedestrians, rail, freight, aviation and canals.

The cost of regional transportation needs is far greater than available funding and resources.

The Plan helps to ensure that federal transportation funds are allocated effectively in order to improve mobility, support economic progress and improve the existing quality of life.

The public meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Town of Webb Municipal Building at 183 Park Ave.

A brief presentation will be given at 6:20 p.m. describing the Long-Range Transportation Plan and the update process, characteristics of the regional transportation system, as well as demographic and travel trends.

The presentation will be followed by a discussion session where the public will have the opportunity to comment on regional transportation issues.

An online survey has also been developed to gather opinions on the importance of the various transportation systems, needs to be addressed and funding priorities.

The survey is available at www.ocgov.net/planning/lrtp-survey until August 31, 2014.
