Forestport: Memory of Harold Pier to be honored at Full Moon Kayaking Outing

The second annual Harold Pier Memorial Full Moon Kayaking Outing will be held Sunday, August 10 on the Forestport Pond.

Put-in begins at 6:30 p.m. at the River Street access and the Woodhull Street access, just past the turn to Forestport Station.

The outing honors the memory of Harold William Pier, who served as professor of chemistry at Utica College of Syracuse University from 1963 to 2000.

He died on October 19, 2012 at his home in Remsen, following a brief bout with cancer.

Pier was the president of the Tramp and Trail group and led the first Blue Moon Kayaking Outing that was held on August 31, 2012 on the Forestport Pond.

According to Jean Wolcott, organizer of the Blue Moon event, Pier greatly enjoyed the outing that attracted 70 kayakers.

At his funeral, Wolcott promised to keep his memory alive by having another kayaking event at the full moon in August. Forty kayakers took part in last year’s paddle that was held on August 20th.

Following this year’s event there will be a celebration of Pier’s life at Scooter’s, 11970 River Street, Forestport.

Friends are asked to bring a Harold story to share.

Special music and refreshments will be available.
