Area towns to take part in National Trails Day celebration

The Town of Inlet will celebrate its 13th consecutive year of National Trails Day hikes with a hike to Lost Pond and Helldiver Pond in the Moose River Plains Recreation Area on Saturday, June 7th.

Anyone wishing to take the hike can meet Mitch Lee at the Inlet Information Office at 9 a.m.

Participants should dress accordingly for the hike, wear proper footwear, pack a lunch, and bring bug repellent.

The round trip hikes are approximately 2.5 miles. The drive into the Moose River Plains will cover more than 10 miles of dirt road to the trailhead.

American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is the country’s largest celebration of trails.

National Trails Day events include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, bird watching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more all over the nation.

CAP-21 in Old Forge is also participating in National Trails Day by encouraging folks to hike or bike the trails at Maple Ridge to McCauley Mountain.

The marked trails range from easy to moderate to hard and from a half-mile to two miles.

Maps are available at the kiosk at the Maple Ridge Trail Head on Park Ave.

CAP-21 is also coordinating a trail maintenance work day beginning at 9 a.m. from the Maple Ridge Trail Head.

Anyone interested in helping to clear and mark trails should contact CAP-21 at (315) 369-3353 or at info@cap-21.org. CAP-21 will be providing refreshments for all registered trail volunteers.
