She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Florence Esse. She is survived by her children Steve (Michele) Grimm, Erik (Susan) Grimm, and Heidi (Doug) Powell Grimm; sisters Debra Selvek and Virginia Reinholtz; and her grandchildren Joel, Kyle, and triplets Alexander, Bradley and Colten; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Sherry, born on December 17, 1942, moved to her home in Inlet in 1997 after retiring from the Greece Central School District where she was a middle school teacher.

She was a graduate of the Sisters of Nazareth School in Rochester and received her degree at SUNY at Oneonta.

A lifelong educator, her body remains with the University of Rochester Medical Center as an anatomical gift to the institution; one last act of teaching.

Sherry enjoyed countless hours hiking, paddling, skiing, horseback riding and biking in her beloved Adirondack mountains, most often with friends and her dogs at her side.  She enjoyed knitting at the Old Forge Hardware store and making pottery at View.

Sherry paddled the Adirondack Canoe Classic each September for the last ten years, most often in the C-4 category with her team of Patty Foley, Barb Getty and Linda Frank who were unofficially known as the “Glow Girls” because of their eccentric paddling apparel.

Her friend, Clark Lubbs of Old Forge, described Sherry in this way: “Sherry Grimm from Inlet. You know, the RAV4 with five dogs in it, a canoe on the roof, and two mountain bikes on the spare tire, with a bag of knitting stuff, packed with hiking boots, always parked in front of Old Forge Hardware? Yeah, that Sherry.”

Sherry had sense of never-ending joy and happiness; bridled with sense of community and fellowship that will be sorely missed but never forgotten. She made everyone feel like family, from sisters to children to grandchildren to friends and acquaintances from all walks of life, because to her, everyone was family.

Her family hosted a well-attended celebratory reception in the Rochester area on Saturday, March 1 and is planning another get-together in her honor in the area this spring for her Adirondack “family.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to View, an arts organization in Old Forge dear to Sherry, at ViewArts.org or P.O. Box 1144, Old Forge, NY 13420.
