The One Square Mile of Hope – 2014 Committee would like to share some updated information about this year’s event that will take place on Saturday, September 13 at Arrowhead Park in Inlet.
We are elated to report that as of early February, we already have over 160 boats registered, representing 13 states.
Our immediate goal is to reach 500 registered boats by April 1st.
Should we reach that goal, Frisky Otter Tours will donate an Aquabound 230 cm Stingray Hybrid Paddle with TLC ferrule to be raffled off, at no extra cost, and awarded to one of those registrants.
We know there are a lot of local folks who will be joining us for this Guinness Record attempt; and encourage you to register now. We also encourage you to become a volunteer.
There are many areas where we will need help, both in preparation for the event and on September 13 as well.
If you can spare even an hour or two, we can find a task for you. To volunteer, call Adele Burnett at the Inlet Information Office at (315) 357-5501 or e-mail info@inletny.com.
As in our former two events, very generous individuals and businesses have already started coming forward with in-kind and monetary sponsorships.
For example, Placid Boat-works of Lake Placid has designed and constructed a custom Rapidfire kayak that has to be seen to be appreciated. Raffle tickets will be available soon.
And both Adirondack and Community Banks of Old Forge have pledged very generous monetary sponsorships.
Many other sponsors are coming onboard, and a full list will be published in the future.
Our long-term goal, of course, is to wrest the Guinness title from the group in Sutton’s Bay on Lake Michigan who floated 2,099 boats last August to erase our 1,902 record of 2011.
We are aiming to create a raft of 3,000 boats so that competitors will have a real challenge on their hands, and we will raise a significant amount of money to support breast cancer research.
This time our primary beneficiary will be The Breast Cancer Research Foundation headquartered in NYC.
Tremendous strides have been made in improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
Research matters, and until the number of deaths from breast cancer is zero, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation remains dedicated to fueling the research of tomorrow needed to save lives today.
OSM-2014 is proud to be partnering with Kiwanis of the Central Adirondacks in this exciting and meaningful event. We hope that you will say, “Count Me In.”
