Old Forge Library hosts Community Read

Festivities celebrating the Old Forge Library’s 100th anniversary began on January 1 with the kick-off of a community read of the book, A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly.

The work of historical fiction, published in 2003, is set in 1906 against the backdrop of Grace Brown’s murder on Big Moose Lake.

The book will appeal to readers of all ages and  many will recognize the local landmarks featured on its pages.

To guage the number of community participants, a thermometer, painted by Sue Freese, will be on display at the Library.

In 2004, A Northern Light won the Carnegie Medal in the UK, where the novel was published under the name of A Gathering Light, and also the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. It was also a runner up for the Prinz Award from the American Library Association, recognizing the year’s best book for young adults.

Donnelly is scheduled to make a special appearance and lead a book discussion at the Library in August.

Copies of the book are available at the library. The book is also on display and available for sale at the Old Forge Hardware.
