It’s a gas when war brings prices down!

To the Editor:

Rejoice Old Forge!

I often open the local newspapers and read about what a wonderful community we live in. It is certainly true—countless testimonies illustrate the generosity and caring of the people of Old Forge and the surrounding communities. This is a great place to live!

I would like to offer another example of recent generosity, to benefit this community. After weeks and weeks of gas prices firmly entrenched at $3.79.9 per gallon, at both of our local gas stations, the grip has loosened!

Alas, the price dropped not once but twice in one week all the way to $3.69.9.

Then, after a couple of days the other gas station followed suit with “one ups-manship” and dropped 11 cents!

Rejoice, it’s a GAS WAR!

However, deeper into the Adirondacks, like Indian Lake ($3.65.9 per gal.) or Weavertown  ($3.55.9 per gal.) or Ticonderoga ($3.44.9 per gal. and free coffee) the excitement fades—especially when you realize that these prices I quote were from two weeks ago. Where’s the Love?

Closer to home, like Otter Lake ($3.59 per gal.) or Boonville ($3.47 per gal.), may again cause you to lose that warm and fuzzy feeling as this 22 cent difference  is what we used to pay for gas in the 60’s.

I believe in keeping business local—it’s important to support those who live and work in this community. But really, tourist season is over!
