Loon quilt raffle to benefit Ad’k Center for Loon Conservation

Biodiversity Research Institute’s (BRI’s) Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation is sponsoring a Loon Quilt Raffle, with proceeds to support the organization’s loon research and outreach initiatives. 2013-NS BRI-AdkCtrLn#79C194

The hand-made queen-sized quilt depicts a pair of loons raising two chicks on an Adirondack lake and is based on a McKenna Ryan design.

It was created by Dr. Nina Schoch, Coordinator of BRI’s Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation and quilted by Susan Ochs of Saranac Lake.

“It was a lot of fun making this unusual quilt and I hope the support it provides will enable us to continue to address numerous threats to Adirondack loons and the lakes and ponds where they live,” said Schoch.

Biodiversity Research Institute and its collaborators have conducted research on the Adirondack loon population since 1998, evaluating the impacts of mercury pollution on aquatic ecosystems, and understanding more about loon migration and the health of Adirondack loons.

The drawing will be held during the inaugural Adirondack Loon Celebration on Sunday, October 13th at the Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center.

The family-friendly event is open from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. and free to the public.

There will be child-friendly activities including a scavenger hunt, crafts, and face painting, as well as educational displays, a loon calling contest and much more.

Raffle tickets are $5 each or six for $25 and can be purchased online at www.briloon.org/adkloon. The quilt can also be viewed on the site.
