Governor’s Paddle Challenge spurs local tourism program

Governor Andrew Cuomo and his team of paddlers and a team led by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg faced off in a whitewater rafting race in Indian Lake on Monday, July 22, the second day of Cuomo’s inaugural “Adirondack Challenge.”

The Governor and his team beat the Bloomberg team by 18 seconds.

The Governor, along with other state and local officials, were drawn to the Hamilton County village to participate in two days of events showcasing the Adirondacks as a tourism destination.

“The Adirondack Challenge is designed to highlight all of what the Adirondack region has to offer to New Yorkers and visitors,” Governor Cuomo said.

The event also kicked off a new $1 million ad campaign by the State’s tourism office featuring the recreation opportunities in the Adirondacks.

The Town of Webb and its tourism office piggybacked on the announcement of the event back in June with the Central Adirondack Paddle Challenge, a program that is running throughout the summer and into the fall.

Anyone can register for this ongoing program.

“It’s the people’s program as they construct it,” said Webb Tourism Director Mike Farmer.

Paddlers who navigate any of the numerous waterways in the Central Adirondacks will receive a Central Adirondack Paddle Challenge decal for their effort. Visit the Old Forge and Inlet Visitor Information Centers or any area paddling or boat rental shop to register and receive your decal.

More information is available at the Old Forge Information Center at (315) 369-6983 or the Inlet Information Office at (315) 357-5501.
