Local youths attend 4-H competition, New Hartford

Three youths from the local 4-H Haderondahs Club were selected to offer public demonstrations at the North Central Division 4-H Public Presentation Program at the Home Depot in New Hartford on May 21, 2011.

Representing Herkimer County in the Junior Division were Old Forge students Matthew Andre and Allison Williams.

In the senior division was Old Forge student Casey Hamlin whose project, The Basic Process of Making Your Own Film, took first place in the county. In the overall competition, Hamlin’s project tied for second place.

Prior to the competition, the 4-H group was mentored by one of its club leaders, Tammy Andre.

According to Andre, the three students worked hard to improve on their demonstrations which were originally presented at Niccolls Memorial Church on April 29.

“Everyone did great under distracting circumstances—in the middle of Home Depot. It was a wonderful experience and we look forward to improving ourselves at future competitions,” said Hamlin.

The 4-H Public Presentation Program, which is offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension, is designed to teach young people how to be comfortable in making a presentation in front of a group of people.
