All aboard for Adirondack Scenic Railroad’s annual Pumpkin Trains

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad will offer plenty of Halloween spooktacular fun aboard the Pumpkin Trains that will depart from Thendara Station on Saturday and Sunday, October 13, 14 and 20 and 21.

The train will travel north through the picturesque Adirondack wilderness to the former site of the New York Central’s Carter Station.

Along the way young passengers will be on the lookout for ghost and goblins lurking in the woods.

Once the train arrives at Carter Station, young costumed passengers will disembark and enter Wally’s Pumpkin Patch where they can select their own pumpkin.

The lucky child who picks “the Great Pumpkin” will have the opportunity to ride back to Thendara Station in the locomotive with the engineer and one parent or guardian.

On the return trip candy will be distributed to all kids on-board. The round-trip journey will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes.  Continue reading

Riders, volunteers, donations, equipment, safety: All signs pointing up at MAC’s Safe Ride service

Over the past few months, the board of MAC’s Safe Ride has seen a rise in the numbers of people utilizing their transportation services.

Of note, said MAC’s Safe Ride spokeswoman Beth Tickner, was the night of Saturday, September 29 when volunteer drivers Martha Denio, Jason Perkins, and Erin Kiefer picked up a record 157 riders between 8 p.m. and 2:30 a.m.

The increase in riders was especially prevalent during the month of August when three nights saw a ridership of over 100 people, Tickner said.

Between Monday, August 13 and Wednesday, August 15, 275 people were picked up and dropped off by volunteers Dylan Clark, Martha Denio, Diane Dale, and Ashley Heroux.

And on Friday, August 24, Eileen McCann and Nanci Russell transported 110 people to their destinations.“All of the drivers and the navigators come back and tell us what a fun and awesome time they had, and what a good feeling it was to be able to help out,” said MAC’s Co-Founder Gisele Kress. Old Forge Fire Chief educates Webb students about fire safety

Old Forge Volunteer Fire Department Chief Charlie Bogardus paid visits to Kinderwood Preschool students and elementary students at the Town of Webb School this week to educate them on the basics of fire safety.

Chief Bogardus met with the three-year-old Kinderwood class on Wednesday, October 10 and talked to them about the dangers of handling matches and cigarette lighters, the importance of testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and how to Stop, Drop and Roll in the event of a fire.

He also brought along a fire phone prop and showed them how to dial 911 in case of an emergency.

Following the demonstrations, Chief Bogardus gave the fire phone to Head Teacher Diane Heroux so she can reinforce the emergency skill with her students, and fire hats were distributed to the students. Continue reading

A huge thanks to Friday and Saturday night’s raffle winners Mark Johnston and George Patterson who generously donated funds back to AYSO.

Congrats to the Boys and Girls Varisty Soccer Teams, you all did a great job! It’s wonderful to see the level of skill and sportsmanship the Town of Webb athletes demonstrated and to know with many of them it all began with AYSO.  plAYSOccer!!!!
