Gary Lee’s Daybreak to Twilight

Birds flocking to feeder results in winter’s first ‘catch & band’

Seventy-nine devastating tornadoes blasted the Mid-western states over to the east coast this week killing at least 39 people and injuring many more.

These storms leveled some small towns completely as the funnel clouds were over a half-mile wide and stayed on the ground for four to five miles.

I’ll take a foot or two of snow any day of the week.

The closest I ever got to that kind of storm was when we were on our way to Florida one year.

We were on I-95 when a funnel cloud passed just south of us and left debris all over the highway.

A few small buildings on either side of the highway were leveled, and that was close enough for me. Continue reading

Just Call me Mrs. Lucky by Jan from Woodgate

I’d be glad to help take the ‘me’ out of emergencies

Emergency: A serious, unexpected and often dangerous situation requiring immediate attention.

There it is folks, the true definition of a much overused word. Somehow, over the years our society has become incredibly lame when it comes to true emergencies.

We’ve all watched the horror of the recent weather-related nightmares taking place right here in our country.

Children being wrenched from their parents’ arms during a tornado immediately comes to my mind.

Homes and entire towns being totally destroyed in a matter of seconds, family members missing for days only to be dug out of crushing debris weeks later.

To me, that’s an emergency.

Much to my disgust our oh-so-spoiled selves have succeeded in modifying this word, as well as the definition.

The new word? ME-mergency.

Yup, that’s right—the ME is right out there in front. Continue reading

ADA’s name changes, but nutritional guidelines stay the same

It’s that time of year again! Spring break is approaching, and before you know it summer and shorts weather will be here (God willing!). So it only seems appropriate that March is National Nutrition Month.

National Nutrition Month (NNM) had its beginnings in 1973 as National Nutrition Week.

It kicked-off with a presidential proclamation, TV and radio public service announcements, news releases, and bumper stickers, all featuring the theme “Invest in Yourself—Buy Nutrition.”

The message was enthusiastically embraced by American Dietetic Association (ADA) members as an opportunity to promote the profession as well as to serve as a vehicle for delivering nutrition education messages to the public.

A lot has changed over the years, including the ADA’s name change last year to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).

According to AND President Sylvia Escott-Stump (whom I have had the pleasure of hearing speak and used the textbook she wrote while I was in school) the ADA had its beginnings in 1917 after working to feed the troops healthfully during World War I.

“The name Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics promotes the strong science background and academic expertise of our members, primarily registered dietitians. Nutrition science underpins wellness, prevention and treatment,” Escott-Stump said.

Through the years, the message of Registered Dietitians around the world has remained basically the same.

Unfortunately research hasn’t always been on our side. You know what I mean.

First we say eggs are bad, then they’re not.

Same goes for coffee.

But our basic message has always been a simple one: eat in moderation, don’t cut out entire food groups, eat from the rainbow, be active, etc. Continue reading
