Letter to the Editor: Village of Herkimer staving off jail construction

To the Editor:

Congratulations and thank you to Mayor Ainsworth and the Board of the Village of Herkimer on their unanimous vote to amend the zoning regulations to prevent the construction of a new county jail within the village limits. This small group of men and women were steadfast in their recognition of the will of their constituents and, despite all the pressures brought against them by the county leadership, they voted to stay true to the principle of a representative democracy and voted the overwhelming will of the people.

Too often in politics we see the practice of “going along to get along,” usually at the sacrifice of some right or principle, but, thankfully, not last night in Herkimer.

A job well done and deserving of our deepest admiration and gratitude.
