I would like to express my deep appreciation to the Town of Webb candidates at the “Meet the Candidates” night held at VIEW on October 27 who all acknowledged the need for our senior program. Our program is a success first and foremost due to the hard work of our volunteers. It is also a success because we are willing to listen to what the seniors want and need.
I am very grateful to Mary Brophy-Moore for pushing for the program to be started. I am also thankful to the Community Health and Wellness Fund for funding our lunches and the Farmers’ Market which donated a lot of fresh healthy produce. These groups really understand the social needs of the seniors who take part in the program.
Cindy Beckley is a valuable team player, as she organizes rides on the CTS vans for some of our SHARP (Senior Health Activity and Recreation Program) participants. Also, Niccolls Church allows us to use their building to meet. It does indeed take a community to make things happen, and I am so proud of the people in this community who have donated food, products, encouragement and support for this much needed program.
It was pouring rain and rather cool and windy on Wednesday, November 28, but that did not stop SHARP participants from going out for a good time. We went to the old bowling alley on North Street, which is now Old Forge Fitness. We were impressed by all the fitness machines.
Then, we had a tour of the Fulton Chain Brewery in the same building. Justin is a very personable guy who gave us an interesting description of how they make beer. The bar has a nice fireplace in the corner and an appealing Adirondack atmosphere. If you visit, ask about their very unique bar and how it was made.
Our gathering on November 11 will be special as we will be spending our entire session at Lakeside Terrace. Because it’s Veteran’s Day we are planning a nice way to honor our veterans. We will have a chance to participate in a writing workshop and, as always, we will also enjoy playing pitch and other games. Our lunch will be prepared by Randy Yuckel of Randy’s Restaurant, courtesy of the Community Health and Wellness Fund.
Contrary to what I wrote last week, SHARP will meet as usual on Wednesday, November 25, so mark your calendars.
SHARP is a free program offered to all independent senior citizens from Woodgate to Raquette Lake.
We meet at Niccolls Memorial Church in Old Forge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Wednesday. Lunch during our regular Wednesday sessions is provided by the Community Health & Wellness Fund (formerly the Town of Webb Health Center Fund.)
