Local June 23 service set for William B. Hale, 79

Bill Hale

William Boyd Hale (Bill) died peacefully at age 79 on March 31, 2012, in Bonita Springs, FL, with his loving wife Judy at his side.

In his lifetime of work as an engineer and lover of the outdoors, he left a lasting mark on the places he lived.

In Puerto Rico, he was a mentor who inspired many. His handiwork can be seen in the roads and subways that will last long after his passing.

In Old Forge, NY he created an oasis for his family that spawned generations of memories. In Estero, FL he fulfilled his dream of living on a golf course and had a gentleman golfer reputation, gaining caring friends wherever he went.

Bill’s life journey took him all over the United States. He was born on October 26, 1932, in Iron Mountain, MI, and grew up in Hamburg, NY, attending St. Peter & Paul’s elementary school and graduating from Hamburg High School in 1950. Continue reading

Thanks to fundraising opportunities, the board of MAC’s Safe Ride has acquired a second vehicle—a 12-passenger blue van—that will soon be hitting the streets of Old Forge.

MAC’s, a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization, provides safe transportation for those who find themselves in a situation where they need a late night ride home.

Currently MAC’s Safe Ride is available on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. until 2:30 a.m., but service will be extended to seven nights a week in June, July, and August.

According to MAC’s spokeswoman and board member, Beth Tickner, nearly 3,000 took advantage of the alternative transportation service over the past year. And this, she said, was made possible through the efforts of a hundred volunteers.

“We would like to have both vans in operation [this summer], but in order to do that we need more volunteer drivers,” Tickner said. Continue reading

This is the second year that 4-H and its youth development program has been offered locally to children ranging in ages from five to 14 years old.

“The children did a wonderful job and you can see a lot of growth from last year to this year,” Andre said. Their ages range from five to fourteen years old, she said.

Old Forge is part of Herkimer County’s program and each year there is a County presentation event followed by a district competition.
