Gov. Cuomo launches ad campaign to promote upstate snowmobiling

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo travelled to the Tug Hill region in the North Country on Monday, December 30 to launch “I [Snowmobile] NY,” the first part of a print, television, radio and digital, nationwide, $4.5 million winter tourism campaign aimed at promoting snowmobiling, skiing, and other recreational activities in Upstate New York.

Cuomo was joined by Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens at the Ridgeview Inn in Lowville to make the announcement of the new campaign which Cuomo said will welcome visitors from around the world to experience winter in Upstate New York.

“The North Country region is unmatched in its natural beauty and now offers new recreational trails for snowmobiling and a wide variety of other activities for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages to explore. As one of the biggest and growing employers in the state, the tourism industry continues to play a significant role in boosting our economy,” he said. Continue reading

Snowmobile class slated January 18

The Inlet Barnstormers Snowmobile Club will offer a children’s snowmobile safety course on Saturday, January 18 at the Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services building on the corner of Route 28 and Limekiln Rd. The course begins at 8 a.m.

This is the New York State Parks required course for children between the ages 10 and 17 to operate a snowmobile off their personal property.

Registration opens on January 6 and is available by calling Ernie Gilbert at (315) 369-3695.

Snowmobile season brings recreation and commerce

Last year the New York State Snowmobile Association released information regarding a study of the economic impact of snowmobiling in New York and the results were staggering.

The report concluded that snowmobiling generates $868 million annually—big business especially in upstate New York.

This is great news for outdoor sportsmen and many area businesses alike.

According to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), there are over 10,300 miles in the Statewide Snowmobile Trail System traversing 47 counties, maintained by over 200 clubs, and funded through 55 municipal sponsors.

The vast trail network is comprised of lands under the jurisdiction of OPRHP, the New York State Department of Environ-mental Conser-vation (DEC), NYS Canal Corporation, national forest land, local governments and many private landowners who have increasingly opened their property to snowmobiling with insurance coverage provided by the state snowmobile program.

Town of Webb trail system: Father of injured snowmobiler calls for better communications services

The father of a 16-year-old snowmobiler who was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident on Sunday, January 22, said he drove six hours from Long Island to address the Town of Webb Board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday the 14th.

Phil Fortuna said that when his son ran his sled into a tree near Rondaxe, he was frustrated at not being able to use his cell phone to contact help.

He was faced with the tough decision of staying to comfort his son, who was unresponsive, or leaving him to find help.

Fortuna said he mounted his sled and drove about a mile and a half before encountering a trail grooming vehicle. Continue reading

National snowmobile TV program spotlights Old Forge trail system

Local snowmobile trail systems will be featured on the national cable series, Snow Trails TV, on Sunday mornings at 7:30 a.m. EST beginning October 16 on Fox Sports Network North, Fox Sports Network Detroit and Madison Square Garden PLUS Network.

Rebroadcasts will be shown weekdays on Time Warner Cable channel 54 and on HD channel 801.

The Town of Webb will be featured in both national and regional broadcasts along with tourism agencies from Lewis, Oneida and Oswego counties.

The episode featuring snowmobile trails in and around Webb will air on Sunday, November 13 and will be rebroadcast on December 4.

Snow Trails TV works in cooperation with organized snowmobiling entities to provide public communication and education about recreational snowmobiling.

The program also spotlights the economic impact of snowmobiling, proper equipment and safety segments.

It reaches 27,000,000 television households weekly.

Webb Publicity Director Mike Farmer rode with Snow Trails TV’s “Video Mike” Grant and his film crew last February to capture footage of the snowmobile trails in and around Old Forge.

The Snow Trails TV crew extended their stay in Old Forge to showcase the local area and business community.

At the conclusion of the filming, Grant said, “We have to get back here. This is what it’s all about. Family snowmobiling, professional grooming, economic impact-Old Forge is ‘Snowmobile Central.'”
