Adirondack rail advocates get support from preservation society

The Remsen-to-Lake Placid Travel Corridor has just been placed on the 2016 list of historic properties to be saved, by the Preservation League of New York State, creating a potential pause to rail removal being proposed from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid.

The Preservation League draws statewide attention to New York’s most important and at-risk historic places through its “Seven to Save” list of endangered places. Continue reading

Ad’k Railroad’s train service mission to Lake Placid just got more difficult

On Thursday he Adirondack Park Authority determined that a proposal to remove the rails between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid doesn’t conflict with the State Land Master Plan.

That plan (SLMP) serves as the foundation for all the restrictions and the permitted uses on State land. The State Dept. of Environmental Conservation came up with this “compromise” to satisfy calls for a recreational trail to be built on the railroad Travel Corridor.

The DEC was charged with creating a trail system in 1996, but has never taken any steps toward that goal.  Continue reading

Remsen–Lake Placid Corridor: Ad’k Park Agency approves amendments, allows for rail removal north of Tupper Lake

The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) determined that proposed amendments to the 1996 Remsen – Lake Placid Travel Corridor Unit Management Plan/FSEIS (The 2016 Plan) conforms to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (APSLMP).

This determination was made after APA deliberated during  its February board meeting.

The APA will now forward the conformance resolution to the Commissioners of the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Depart-ment of Transportation for final adoption.  Continue reading

Additional public comment opportunity for the Remsen– Lake Placid Travel Corridor: Utica hearing set July 20th

A second public hearing regarding a proposed amendment to the Unit Manage-ment Plan (UMP) for the Remsen – Lake Placid Travel Corridor (Corridor) has been scheduled for Monday, July 20 in Utica.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens and State Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll announced today. Continue reading

Remsen-Lake Placid Corridor: Comment period ends December 15th

The State Departments of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Transportation (DOT) are seeking public input through December 15 on a possible amendment to the Unit Management Plan (UMP) for the Remsen-Lake Placid Travel Corridor (the Corridor).

The UMP governs the use of the 119-mile Corridor.  Continue reading
