Spring service planned for Timothy (Buzz) J. Centola, 72

Centola Tim pc picTimothy (Buzz) J. Centola, 72, of Old Forge and formerly of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with his wife and friends by his side.

He was born on April 1, 1943, in Syracuse, the son of the late Dolores Centola and graduated from Whitesboro High School. Tim was united in marriage to Pamela Dundon on November 21, 1992, at their home in Old Forge.

He started his career with Niagara Mohawk as a service man in Utica and retired as a hot stick lineman in Old Forge after 34 years of service. After retiring from Niagara Mohawk, he worked as an electrician in Old Forge.  Continue reading

Spring services planned for Jeffrey M. Russell, 51

Jeffrey M. Russell, 51, of Palm Harbor, FL, and formerly of Old Forge, passed away suddenly on February 5, 2016.

Jeffrey was born March 12, 1964, the son of Eugene and Virginia Tiffany Russell. He spent his childhood days in Old Forge, attending the Town of Webb Schools, where he graduated in 1982.   Continue reading

Service held for Devere L. ‘Dutch’ Vandervort, 91

RDC073826-1_20160202Devere L. “Dutch” Vandervort, 91, of Burnsville, MN, formerly of Old Forge, NY, San Diego, CA and Tomah, WI, passed away on February 1, 2016.

Dutch retired from Eastman Kodak after a distinguished career of 30-plus years.

He was an active and committed volunteer at VIEW, the arts center in Old Forge. Most recently he sat on the By Laws Committee in 2010-11; many of his suggestions were implemented. He was a generous donor, making gifts to name the Vandervort Gallery and the Executive Director’s office in memory of his daughter Susan.  Continue reading

Paul R. Giessler, 55, of Old Forge and formerly of Waterloo, NY passed away unexpectedly at his business on Sunday, January 24, 2016.

He was born on July 4, 1960 in Lyons, NY a son of the late Otto and Adrienne (Dapolito) Giessler. He was a graduate of Herkimer County Community College.

Paul was retired from the Town of Webb School and was currently the owner/operator of Mr. G’s Soup Garden in Old Forge. Continue reading

Spring service planned for William Peacock, 93

PEACOCK, WM PICWilliam Y. Peacock, a long-time resident of William St., in Old Forge passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2016, after a short illness.

He was a remarkable man with a good sense of humor. “Willie” was fortunate to be able to be independent and live in his own home until a few weeks before his death.

At 93, he was still cooking, cleaning and mowing the lawn (and his neighbor’s lawn, too!) for himself. Continue reading

Diana ‘Dinny’ Riggs Genung passes away

DIANA_R_GENUNG_PHOTODiana Riggs Genung died peacefully on January 11, 2016, surrounded by her family at the Parlin House Hospice Residence in Wayland, MA, following a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Known from an early age as Dinny, she was born in Elmira, NY in 1946, the daughter of Elizabeth Falck Riggs Hart and John S. Riggs. She graduated from Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, MA and Beaver College in Glenside, PA.

Dinny was recognized and deeply loved by her friends, her large family and those she touched for her kind, charitable and accepting nature.  Continue reading

Gene M. Etchie, 79, passes away

Gene M. Etchie, 79; of Fulton passed away at Oswego Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Syracuse, NY to the late Freeman and Eleanor (Michaud) Etchie.

Mr. Etchie was a longtime resident of Fulton until moving to Old Forge, NY where he resided for over 30 years.  Continue reading
