Funeral service held for Howard J. Weiman, 97

Howard WeimanHoward J. Weiman, 97, a longtime resident of the Limekiln Lake Road, Inlet, a well-known master carpenter in the Adirondack region and more recently of Crosby Boulevard, Old Forge, husband of the late Gloria, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, where he had resided since October 2014.

He was born on May 23, 1917, on the Weiman Homestead farm at High Market, a son of Joseph and Hope Washburn Weiman. He grew up in High Market and attended a District School near Fish Creek, later attending Constableville High School, graduating with the Class of 1934.   Continue reading

Memorial Day thanks from Inlet

The American Legion Post 1402 and the Town of Inlet would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2014 Hamilton County Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. SAM_0622

The weather was great for the one-mile march from the Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services building to Arrowhead Park.

The Inlet Youth Commission handed out red, white and blue helium balloons to the spectators lining the street downtown and made sure those who marched had water to drink. Continue reading

Old Forge readies Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony

Capt. Christopher W. Simpson USMC to be welcomed as guest speaker

The Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony in Old Forge will be held on Monday, May 27th.

Marchers should line up on Gilbert Street between the Post Office and the Town of Webb School by 9:45 a.m.

The parade begins from the school at 10 a.m. following a wreath laying ceremony at the Memorial Stone on the school lawn.

Marchers will include members of American Legion Post #893, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Old Forge Fire Department and their Auxiliary, and the Town of Webb School Band.

The parade will continue along Main Street, stopping briefly to place a wreath on the Memorial Stone at the Fire Hall, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the American Legion Covey-Pashley Post #893.

From there the parade will proceed to Riverview Cemetery where the Memorial Day Ceremony will begin with a welcome by Covey Pashley Post #893 Commander Bill Simpson. Master of Ceremonies will be Bill Ransom.

The Invocation will be conducted by Father Shane Lynch, Pastor of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Old Forge, with Benediction conducted by Rev. Lawrence Bartel of Niccolls Memorial Church, Old Forge. Continue reading

Old Forge hosts Memorial Day parade and ceremonies

The Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26 at Riverview Cemetery in Old Forge immediately following the parade along Route 28, was presided over by Master of Ceremonies, Bill Ransom, of the Covey- Pashley American Legion Post 893.

First Vice Commander William Simpson welcomed the gathering at Riverview Cemetery, in the absence Commander Brad Birney, who was unable to attend.

Following the Laying of the Wreath by First Commander William Simpson, Guest Speaker Colonel John Balbierer, and local Legionnaires Dick Hart and Jim Ehrensbeck, the Town of Webb School High School Band performed, “The Star Spangled Banner,” under the direction of Gregory Clark.

The Niccolls Church Bell Choir also performed traditional music, including,

“America,” under the direction of Sue Rundell.

Colonel John Balbierer,  Vice Wing Commander for the 174th Fighter Wing, New York Air National Guard, addressed the large crowd encircling the Memorial Stone following the musical presentation.

“There is simply no better or no more honorable calling than the service of this great nation,” said Colonel Balbierer, who has served 31 years in the military and has received many major awards and decorations.

In conclusion, he paid tribute to all those who served in the past and all who are currently serving today, especially native son, Air Force Major Adam Court, son of Cathy and Bob Dibble of Old Forge.

Major Court is currently flying combat missions in Kabul and Afghanistan.

Master of Ceremonies Bill Ransom introduced the Community Choir, who sang patriotic songs under the direction of Judy Barker.

Ransom also recognized Charlie Kiefer, sitting with the other veterans, who served for many years as the emcee during Memorial Day ceremonies.

This was followed by the 21 Gun Salute by the Firing Squad, commanded by Fred Ehrensbeck. Taps was played by Bryan Townsend and Ethan Kress of the Town of Webb School Band.

The Invocation was conducted by Father Shane Lynch of St. Bartholomew’s Church and Benediction was given by Rev. Joanne Bartel of Niccolls Church.

Following the ceremony, refreshments were served at the Old Forge Fire Department.
