LETTER: Elected officials should acknowledge public input

Letter to the Editor:

In mid-July, I sent a letter to the Town Supervisor and the Town of Webb Board members.

I was questioning why no one had been notified concerning the “No Signage” rule about signs on town and state property. Continue reading

Webb Historical Assn. seeking community help with photo archive project

To the Editor:

Since the 1970’s the Town of Webb Historical Association has been receiving artifacts, ephemera and photographs that document our rich, diverse, interwoven relationships as families, businesses and communities.

Many individuals and multiple administrations ave acted as stewards of these priceless keepsakes, taking care of your history for future generations.

One family, in particular, has given our children a priceless gift. We call it the “Weedmark Collection.” It contains over 33,000 negatives and hundreds of photos. Talk about a family album!

Our goal for 2016 is to begin the tedious job of digitizing, archiving and preserving these priceless treasures. To date, over 8,000 museum collection photos have been digitized. We are ready to conquer the negatives.

To process these negatives, we need help from the community. Please help us by making a monetary donation to TOWHA earmarked specifically for this need. Once completed, these great gems of our past will be available for the public once again!

We will have wedding photos, baby pictures, senior class photos, photos of just about every event in town from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and more!

I greatly appreciate your generosity, to assist us, in preserving your past!

H. Stuart deCamp

President, TOWHA

Councilman: Simple downed-pole became something else quickly

To the Editor:

Soccer field lights have been quite a topic lately. I would like to write this letter to try and clarify the history behind the unfortunate situation that we are in for this soccer season.

Earlier this spring I received a phone call that a light pole had fallen on the field, and within 20 minutes I was standing on the field. I was amazed at the pole’s rotted condition, and don’t know how it stood as long as it did.   Continue reading

Voters: Please elect councilpersons that recognize our regional treasures

To the Editor:

At what point do we say enough! Is it the three or four boats that exceed the State noise limits by a factor of 10 or more and annoy and irritate hundreds of taxpayers who own properties on the lakes.

For some reason, these few boats can’t or won’t be stopped and kicked off the lakes. How about the boats that continue to ignore speed limits near docks endangering swimmers and producing wake that requires additional maintenance to docks and shorelines.   Continue reading

Webb Community: Can we talk about our youths?

To the Editor:

Much of the town talk has taken a turn toward the candidates and their platforms in the upcoming elections. I am writing this with the hope of bringing issues of our young community to the table.

I hear talk about financial responsibility, affordable housing, elderly services, tourism, etc. All issues that need to be addressed and deserve community attention, but will anyone address the elephant in the room?   Continue reading

Forestport Republican Committee endorses Bill Gardner for Highway Superintendent

Bill Gardner_crpTo the Editor:

We would like to make the citizens of Forestport aware of our thinking as to why Mr. Gardner is the best choice for the tax payers of Forestport. Mr. Gardner has been elected Highway Superintendent spanning nearly two decades and has a record of responsibility and accountability.

He manages more than a dozen associates during peak periods. His duties also involve the purchase of sand, salt, trucks and winter product, maintains equipment and is responsible for building maintenance as well as interfacing with county and local towns during the year. He is responsible for maintaining a 1.5 million dollar budget each year and has cut almost $150,000 in expenses to that budget over the last 4 years despite facing some of the worst winter weather in recent history.  Continue reading

Forestport: Supervisor Snead doesn’t deserve another term

To the Editor:

Over the past year I have FOILed, observed, researched and found Parker Snead to be greatly lacking in the way he has conducted business as Supervisor of the Town of Forestport during his present term.

I believe he has shown himself to be inept in a number of areas and fallen way short in serving the needs of the taxpayers.  Continue reading
