Hard Times Café: Adirondacker’s dream fulfilled as new owner of popular Eagle Bay establishment

It’s been said that if you choose a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life.

Those are words to live by for Michael Heller, a 25-plus year veteran of the food industry who on November 1 will become the new owner of Eagle Bay’s Hard Times Café.

A native of Diamond Point, a small community situated on Lake George, Heller has spent most of his life catering to the culinary needs of Adirondack visitors and residents. Continue reading →

The Historic Hard Times

According to the book, God’s Country by Clara Vaughan Hatcher O’Brien, the current Hard Times Café building was originally built in the early 1930’s by Alfred Nelson as a replacement for a small building that had burned in his lumber yard.

It was purchased by Prentice and Al Wood, a couple experienced in food service, who came to Eagle Bay looking for a place to establish a restaurant. Continue reading →
