Adirondack Community Trust and North Country Public Radio receive grant Award to foster informational projects in north country communities

The Adirondack Community Trust (ACT) in partnership with North Country Public Radio (NCPR) has received a $300,000 challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to invest in the future of NCPR’s ability to expand regional broadcast and digital news and information services with a special emphasis on creating the next generation of public media professionals.

With the required match, this project will bring $650,000 to $700,000 to the work of these organizations over the next three years.

The objective of the project, 21st Century Public Media on a Rural Map, is to make all NCPR platforms part of a single, integrated resource for the people of the Adirondack region—a resource that they can increasingly play a part in imagining and shaping.

As part of the challenge, this grant has to be matched with local dollars from local residents.

The funding is part of the Knight Community Information Challenge, which encourages community and place-based foundations to support news and information projects that inform and engage residents.

ACT and NCPR are two key organizations tying communities of the region together.

This partnership will take NCPR’s service to a new level by expanding its work on existing and emerging platforms and by deepening the integration of community participation in public media.

More residents will have access to information on a variety of platforms; they will participate in creating content and sharing information; young people will have an opportunity to work under the guidance of proven professionals to learn the skills of public media; and more people will connect with other residents of the region.

“With this Knight Foundation grant, ACT is making it possible for NCPR to do leading-edge work for our community. As an active collaborator on the project, ACT brings expertise, access to and input from people across the region, and a great reputation-contributions that are essential to the project’s success,” said Ellen Rocco, NCPR Station Manager.

Congressman Owens to visit Woodgate Post Office on June 29 by John Isley

Congressman William Owens (D-23) will be present at the Woodgate Community Hall on Wednesday, June 29 at 2:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed closing of the Woodgate Post Office with officials of the Town of Forestport and representatives from the Woodgate Citizens Committee.

The Woodgate Community Hall is located on the Bear Creek Road. The public is welcome to attend.

While in the area Congress-man Owens will tour the Woodgate Post Office and the Woodgate Library.

Twenty-two post offices in Owens’ congressional district will be affected by the proposed USPS closings and consolidations.

Owens has written Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe in opposition of the actions.

Owens said he is also co-sponsor of House Bill HR1351, the USPS Pension Obligation Recalcualtion and Restoration Act of 2011.

According to Owens, the bill would help the Postal Service recoup nearly $7 billion in overpayments to its pension fund which could ultimately be used to continue serving rural America to the fullest extent possible.

Closure of the 3,400 small post offices nationwide would result in a 0.7 percent in savings to the Postal Service.

U. S. Senator Charles Schumer has also joined the Woodgate Post Office closure prevention actions by directing a letter concerning Woodgate to Marita Hines at the Postmaster General’s office.

A petition with over 600 signatures in opposition of Woodgate’s closure is being forwarded to the Postal Service and legislative leaders.

The Town of Forestport Town Board passed a resolution at their regular monthly meeting on June 15 in support of keeping the Woodgate Post Office open and appointing a new post master.

The Citizens Committee will meet at the Woodgate Library on Monday, June 20 at 7 p.m. to discuss its ongoing actions.

Thendara: St. Pio’s to resume Latin Masses on Sunday, June 19

The Most Rev. Richard Euler, Priest in Charge of St. Pio’s Old Roman Catholic Summer Mission, announces that the first offical Mass of the 2011 summer season will be held Sunday, June 19 at 10 a.m., at 333 Green Bridge Road, Thendara, across from the Old Bottling Plant.

Masses have been ongoing since Ascension Thursday and will continue thru Labor Day. Masses are held each day at 8 a.m. during the week and at 10 a.m. on Sundays. All Masses are the Traditional Mass of St. Pius V presented in Latin.

Euler is the Auxiliary Bishop of the Old Roman Cahtolic Diocese of Florida under The Most Rev. John J. Humphreys, D.D., with churches in and around Florida and Tennessee.

The group is dedicated to preserving the traditional liturgy some 1,500 years old.

Since the Latin Mass has been given greater emphasis in recent years, St. Pio’s offers a summer opportunity to either refresh your memory of this liturgy or to attend and see it for the first time.

All are invited and encouraged to attend.
