Limiting certain excesses can be key in treating male infertility

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

Pregnancy for most couples conjures happy thoughts of healthy babies and prenatal ultrasounds. Though for many couples infertility can be a trying time. About 50% of the time the cause of infertility is traced to the male with the remaining 50% attributable to the female.

Female infertility usually receives a great deal of attention and discussion and is probably best discussed in conjunction with a gyn physician.

Yet how many men in their twenties, thirties, or forties actually discuss these issues with their wife’s gyn…or their primary care physicians…none. Continue reading

Keys to identifying the causes and symptoms of stroke

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

A stroke or Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted.  Any interruption of blood flow very quickly results in the death of brain tissue.

When we refer to a stroke we use this term broadly to describe two very different types of events.

In the first type of event, an ischemic stroke, a clot forms in a brain artery or at a distant blood vessel and then travels to the brain.

This, in effect, kills the brain tissue downstream from the blockage.

An ischemic stroke usually occurs from fat, cholesterol, and other substances that collect in arterial walls and then break loose.

It often results from disease of the carotid arteries in the neck.

Conversely, a hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weak area in a blood vessel in the brain gives way and bleeding results.

This is usually—but not always—is a result of a genetic condition.

There are a number of risk factors associated with stroke including an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, age greater than 55, race, and family history.  Continue reading

Be proactive: Ask questions before submitting to medical radiation tests

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

When the doctor suggests a test, probably the last thing on your mind is that test might cause you harm.

But the fact of the matter is many thousands of cancers are attributable to medical testing each year due to the radiation implicit in these tests.

When we talk about radiation, we can be referring to anything from heat from a toaster oven, to microwaves from a microwave oven, to ionizing radiation that comes from the sun.

Similar to the radiation produced by the sun, radiation produced by x rays, CT scans, mammograms, and nuclear medicine tests is invisible and alters our DNA resulting in cancer. Radiation exposure is dosed in units called the millisievert.

These units help to compare different radiation exposures. Continue reading

Hypertension: Diet modification, exercise, stress reduction to lower blood pressure

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

Hypertension, known as the silent killer, affects millions of Americans and is directly implicated as a causative factor in heart attacks, strokes, and renal failure.

This discussion focuses on arterial hypertension, one of two types of hypertension.

Arterial hypertension is defined by a blood pressure of 140/90 in a non-diabetic patient and 130/80 in a patient with diabetes.

To a point, the goal is to have the lowest possible pressure to supply the heart, brain, and body with adequate blood flow. Continue reading

Common food package material can cause disruptions to health

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical found in many plastics, polycarbonate products, water bottles, and can linings.

Nearly 2.2 million tons of this chemical are used to package foods and beverages that we eat every day.

BPA is a chemical well known to be an endocrine disrupter. This means that it behaves like a hormone similar to estrogen or other hormones. Continue reading

Pay special attention to causes of carbon monoxide poisoning, especially in winter

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

Carbon monoxide poisoning results from exposure to carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas. Its production is a result of combustion from any fuel source.

Common sources include oil, gas, kerosene, propane or wood.

With the cost of home heating fuel, many people are insulating their homes.

This makes it even more imperative that all appliances that produce carbon monoxide are working properly.

Medically speaking, carbon monoxide is deadly because it binds to hemoglobin, the oxygen carrying component in blood, about 230 times more readily than oxygen. Continue reading

Hand washing: Effective in preventing spread of germs, disease

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

Keeping hands clean is without a doubt the most important way to prevent the spread of germs and disease.

It is especially important during the cold and flu seasons.

Hands should be washed before preparing or eating food, after using the rest room, blowing the nose, coughing, or sneezing.

They should even be washed after touching an animal or pet.

Proper hand washing technique consists of wetting the hands with warm or cold water.

The temperature of the water is for comfort only since even warm water is too cool to kill bacteria. Continue reading
